Three versions of Foo Fighters Times Like These

I have been working nothing short of stupid hours for the majority of the year and my practice/play times has been slim to none as a result. I needed a mental break in the worst way this evening and finally picked up the guitars. I thought it would be fun to try Foo Fighters Times Like These on all my acoustics - my Sigma 12 string, my Gretsch resonator and my Taylor 6string. Here are recordings of each of them.

Hi Joe,

Usually here there is no better way than to take some rest in your head and either solve or at least take a break from the trouble and just start playing music .

Nive playing I listend to the first one :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

and wish you all the best,

Greetings

Thanks Roger. Yeah, I keep telling myself I need to take a break and play a song, practice a scale or something. Next thing I know it’s late in the night and I just log off and go to bed. Last night I logged off a bit earlier than I have been and welcomed the guitar bug.

Great playing, especially for not having picked up the guitar in a while. It’s a great escape. Hours go by like seconds whenever I play. Great therapy. Thanks for sharing. Only thing I would mention is, when you record a video of you playing, make sure people can always see your fretting and strumming hand. Good for the most part. The 12 string video could have shown more of you playing. Good voice though.

Listened to all three: for me, the last one on the Taylor is best; most confident, least rushed delivery. Hope your work/life balance allows more practice time.

Good to hear from you, Joe. I sampled a verse and chorus of each and all sounded good. If pushed I’d lean to the plain old 6 string as most appealing to me.

Such a cool song, one fine day I should have a go at it . . . see if it is one of those I can get on with or the otehr kind that I can’t get the vocal and strumming to sit together.

Take care, look after yourself.

Nicely done. I like to play this one as well. But your voice is much better than mine!

Thanks @jvlynch Jim. I normally stand while recording myself which shows the full guitar. I was too tired last night and opted to sit on my drum stool and couldn’t get the camera situated quite right. You are so right that the hours just go by while playing. I had planned to play only one song and go to bed but ended up playing for an hour or so.

Thanks @beejay56 Brian. Ironically, I posted these in the reverse order in which I played them. I started out in the Taylor and thought “hmm, I wonder what it will sound like on the resonator” and then “hmm, I wonder what it will sound like in the 12 string”. I think I was getting tired as I moved along. I know my voice was feeling it by the time I got to the 12 string.

Thanks @DavidP I have heard you play. I’m sure you could play it quite well if you want to. :+1:

Thanks @dmisen Dean. Yeah it is such a fun one to play. I suspect you are selling yourself short regarding your voice.

Work is good but not when it stops you playing guitar … can you park a guitar next to your desk? I have started doing that and there are always odd 5 minutes here and there were you need a mental break and just run through a song or practise a tricky part for a few minutes resets mentally like few other things.

I didn’t know the song so I listened to it before your videos. Watched the first in full and the other two just long enough to see how they sounded. It’s a decent song and you’ve done a decent job of covering it. Nothing to fault from me.

Thanks @MollyT Molly you are so right. I’m about ready to look for something new. They just keep piling it on and can’t understand why things get missed. I work from home and have all my guitars in my office just for the reason you mention but sadly don’t pick them up often. Works gotten so bad I’m having a tough finding enjoyment in the things I love. I’m very thankful last night was an exception and brought me out of my funk if just for an evening. I do need to step back and allow myself to play five minutes here and five minutes there during the day, even if it’s just playing something I know practicing new skills.

Thanks @Willsie John, I love that song and never thought I’d be able to play it until I saw Justin’s lesson. I then went looking for the acoustic version and found a couple online, especially a live version from around 2003, I really like. The original electric version is great but would need to figure out my looper or play with somebody. Even though I don’t play it when doing the whole song, I did get the riff down and enjoy playing it occasionally.

Yea, nicely done Joe. Persistence is the key as we know but it’s great to just go off piste occasionally and just have a go at something for fun.

Well done, enjoyed the different sounds. :+1:
