I tend to put my thumb on the back of the neck so I can “squeeze” when playing chords. is this faulty?
Think that’s the correct method. Just make sure you don’t squeeze too hard
I didn’t just now watch Justin’s video, but I have.
From memory, the back of the neck is proper. But there are times when ya can bring it to different places.
I use my thumb to mute bottom strings sometimes, or even fret some notes other times.
When learning, back of the neck is best, from my memory of the above video though.
As a beginner technique that is best. Lots of blues players wrap the thumb over the top, it’s a technique that can be worked on as a player progresses. Most players adjust the thumb depending on what they are playing. There are several reasons to move your thumb from the middle of the neck. One, it helps mute the 6th of 5th strings when necessary. Second, for bending notes, that gives you more leverage. Also, you can use your thumb for fretting notes on the 6th string (sure, it’s not “proper” classical technique, but it helps in the right situations).
Not so much about where around the neck (over, middle or low), but I have found that paying attention to keeping my thumb more in line with my index finger or thereabouts along the neck rather than letting it “lag behind” towards the nut makes a big difference. Reach, staying clear of accidentally muting high E string, and hitting chord changes cleanly.
