I have been playing this song for a while now using the typical open chords. BUT, I play electric guitar and am now playing this with other musicians, including another guitar. So, it all sounds very messy. A while ago when I started playing with others at jams I found playing open chords just sounded wrong, and a little difficult when keys were changed. I started playing barre chords instead, and even simplified barre chords. Much easier to work in and sort out the chord progression.
I have just re-learned To Her Door using this technique and actually found it easier than the open chords. Plus adding fretting hand muting to the strumming pattern gives it a real groove.
I wouldn’t mind trying to work out a simple version of the lead. The real lead is actually quite complex (for me anyway). At the moment I am just playing triads on the G B and e strings during this bit to make it sound a little more interesting.
