Tommy's new guitar

Hi there,
I recently turned 40 and I got a present of a €1,000 towards a new guitar. Spoiled or what!!! I’m interested in a semi acoustic with a cutaway. Could anyone give any recommendations for guitars in that shape and in that price range?
Kind regards,
Tom.

Not sure if I’m posting in the right place

Hi Tom welcome to JG!

Are you after an es-335 style thing or an acoustic electric or something like a thinline Telecaster?

I’m gonna guess a 335ish style, can you stretch to the DG-335? That looks nice!

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for the lack of detail. I’m looking for electric acoustic. Is Thomann a good site to buy off?
Kind regards Tom

Thomann is huge. Europes big daddy like sweetwater in the US.

UK Thomann or Andertons if you are uk based.

Its much better if you can go to a store and play the instruments though.

Or do you think spending on a regular acoutic and getting microphones for the guitar would be a better option, any advice would hugely appreciated.

Nice one thanks.

Really depends what you want to play and how it sounds.

An electric, hollow body or semi hollow, isnt going to sound like an acoustic unless its something like one of those fender acoustisonics

It’ll sound like an electric.

An acoustic will have a piezo pickup, possibly a microphone built in but even combined they dont sound like what a mike would.

So really depends what you want to play/sound like. You’ll never get an acoustic to sound like an electric overdiven to play sabath or metallica etc.

You can make an electric sound quite like an acoustic with the right amp/settings but still its not the same or the same playing exp.

Theres a lot of choice out there but 99.99% of an electric guitars sound is the pickups and the amp

That’s great advice. Thank you.

The main thing is to get out and take a look, even though you have (to me) a healthy budget I would probably avoid the top well known brands, they don’t really represent good value for money.
To me I would be looking at brands like Yamaha, Breedlove, Ibanez, Sigma, Alvarez and Framus (if you can find them) a high end model of any of those would be better than the price equivalent from the big brands.
If you’re in the UK there’s Richard’s Guitars in Stratford, if you can get there he’s got some amazing high quality high value guitars there, well worth getting there if possible. He has a really great brand of acoustic guitars, Dowinia that could fit your budget!

As an Aussi I recently purchased a Cole Clark Angel1 which as a 3 way pickup that is supposed to compare with the best in the world, Australian sustainable timbers, all wood, Anderton’s Guitars did a review on them. The guitar feels and sounds beautiful to play.

The PRS semi hollows are pretty good. I have a Zach Myers PRS which is picked up very often. It is very comfortable to play and has a great variety of tones. Most of the big guitar retailers will have PRS models that you can try.
