Hello everyone!

I just transcribed Black Night by Deep Purple and I noticed that, although the notes are right, they are in a different part of the neck.
More specifically, I played the E note on the 2nd fret of the 4th string instead of the 7th fret of the 5th string.
After I played them both I didnā€™t notice any particular tone difference.

How ā€œwrongā€ is it to play it this way and how can I distinguish such small differences?

Thanks in advance!

It not wrong at all. You canā€™t they are the same note. 2nd fret D string is the same note as 7th fret A string. Different spots on the neck are more comfortable to play than other spots. For example youā€™ll finf it easier to bends notes up at the 7th fret than the 2nd. This is why most electric guitar parts are higher up on the neck. When you start playing the e B G string up higher on the neck youā€™re getting into higher octaves that are only on those string but from the open to 12 fret you will find the same notes in multiple spots.

Hey, i find this one quite challenging. Especially to hear out the low notes. But i think Justin made a Mistake for the Hint of Another One Bites The Dust.
Listening i could hear it descending at first, also online tabs said too it goes from A, G then starts the repeating E.

Can anyone confirm?

Excellent Challenge. YES :+1:  :sunglasses:

Same here! Before checking the hints I thought it was F.

Pretty sure another one bites the dust is off tune. It sounds much more like E# than E in my books. Iā€™ve played along to different copies of the song. Not sure why itā€™s being taught as E?

Typo surely @JGAdmin in the lesson notes? ā€˜Black Knightā€™ should read ā€˜Nightā€™

Yes. I heard this and transcribed this as well.

iā€™m struggling with this and missed all 3 of the riffs that i didnā€™t know already. the upside is that i came up with a pretty cool riff based on the Black Night riff. i wonā€™t give up, but check with me in 5 years to see if iā€™ve improved

Do we have the answers to these as well as the hints? Tried to work out Satisfaction and still canā€™t get it even with the hint!

Justin notes ā€œIn 30 years of teaching, Iā€™ve only met one student who couldnā€™t hear the pitches and couldnā€™t transcribe.ā€ Well I think that Iā€™m number two!

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi Stuart,

Iā€™m afraid we donā€™t have the answers here anywhere to avoid spoilers or cheating.

If you really want to look it up, you probably have to check tabs on Ultimate Guitar or comparable sources. For Satisfaction, Iā€™m sure they have it there without mistakes. Else, message me in private. I had it done myself and probably find it somewhere in my chaos.

Definitely a challenge for me. I was able to get the sound right, but I went to far up the neck for Pretty Woman (made the fingering harder than it had to be). Same for the Redemption Song.

I thought that would be the case. Iā€™m not looking to cheat but as someone who genuinely has no clue the answers would help. Perhaps they could be hidden or linked?

I had the same thoughts, too, at some points, as I was struggling with some of the transcribing tasks. Maybe Richard @Richard_close2u has an idea, if this could be handled in a way?

Of course we could just ask google, but in between all the good transcriptions, there is also a lot of crap. So having a certified answer would not be all too bad.

Hi Lisa and others,

Below I quote a message from Justin after repeated requests from students in the blim group for a hidden linkā€¦

ā€œI wasnā€™t planning to  when you transcribe in the real world - you donā€™t get to find out!ā€

of course I have no idea whether Richard also thinks the same way, but maybe for considerationā€¦ I would say if it doesnā€™t sound like what you are playing is what you hear from the original you have to continue

Greetings

Agreed. At least then you would know what the correct answer is. At the moment I just floundering around without much clue.

As this is part of the module I thought that I would give transcribing another go (as having failed on previous lessons) but as there is little help to know what is right or wrong then I guess that transcribing is not for me.
