I noticed yesterday when I went to my start page at Justine guitar dot Com main learning site there is a redesign with more information. I just wanted to say I really like it. The addition of the upcoming live event classes that were added last month were hella helpful for me and now the fast links to the tabs (I don’t have yet) and the my progress are super rad. It would be really cool if we could customize it. But I am not complaining, I love it.
Thank you team for continuing to keep the user Interface layout fresh and functional. It is nice especially for those of us who like to use mobile devices for a majority of practice. Great work.
It may be alright for people using their phones but on a 32 inch monitor the buttons could be toned down 90% or left off completely. On a computer all these links have always been in the side bar menu on the left of the screen except the Tab Library which could be easily added.
Well this is the mobile view of course. It has for me become much closer for what a personal Landing page should be. "Here Is where I can start my guitar stuff with the minimum amount of effort. I don’t want drop downs as they are impossible from a mobile. Just one poke and go.
From here I can just put my phone in the cradle on my boom mic stand or clip it to my dash board and use my stylus to move around pages. I honestly don’t even know what the desktop view looks like.
Did that change also?
TBH I honestly don’t think I have used a laptop for justins site bairly a handful of times. Win11 is a total pain because everything is so clunky but we are getting beyond the discussion
My laptop is reserved for power hungry things like my DAW or running Guitar Pro. I use a few other thing with it but, I was not even using a laptop during guitar practice my first 14 month of learning guitar. It was not until until I got Guitar Pro.
Ok wow the eyes dont lie on desktop they take up a fair bit of real-estate.
Point taken.
Edit for me thats no effort. But for desk top its the opposite. Interesting how depending on devices type makes a big difference of page lay out. Good thing I work in medicine and not coding or page design.
Desktop user here. A couple of quick links for frequently used sections are of course useful, although I would rather keep them in the sidebar. I can see a tabs link being added there. But how often does one need the ‘manage subscriptions’ link? And personally I don’t use the journey tab al that often, so I wouldn’t put that at the top either.
They’re almost 4in wide on my monitor at work I think you could see then from the space station, not to bad on my tablet but could still be smaller.
You’ll see on Nate’s screen shoot the Blue menu on the left has 3 of the 4 buttons and a few more like favorites, songbook and notes. I think it would have been more useful to add that to a phone some how. But I quess it would be a drop down menu which the phone already has. Hard to make a standard for different size screens.
I worked for 10 years as a web designer. The move to mobile was one of the reasons I gave up. You don’t make a standard for different screens, you would ideally have to design three or four completely different sites and then load the one that best matches the device.
I don’t mind the new arrangement on desktop. I would much prefer a busy screen full of options over having to scroll down endlessly through massive, mostly-empty blocks, past meaningless images, to find what I want.
Desktop user here. I’m ambivalent about it. I think I can navigate to where I need to without the additional buttons. Maybe a link to a random song of the day might be an idea?
I do agree with everyone who is pointing out that most of those buttons are already on the left sidebar.
I understand wanting to feature some things. The tab library is new, so you want to highlight that. That’s fine. But the Practice and Journey stuff is RIGHT THERE on the sidebar. And the subscription access is under the Account option on the sidebar. There’s no need for them to get GIANT panels.
My solution: Put the Tab Library into the sidebar with the others. Since it’s new, feature it up top. Maybe rotate it or combine it with a “Song of the Day” or something like that. Move the right column up to reduce the amount of space that row occupies so the “Upcoming Live Event” panel features in that top row, also.
I think they should be small enough so all 4 fit in one row on a phone. If you look at Jasons original post each button is in its own row. When viewed on anything bigger than a phone they line up on one row but are way to larger and appear like cheesy adds and not website content.
If they were the same size as the left menu buttons they would appear on a phone as one row and not so huge one everything else.
@FannyJustinGuitar can you have the web designer read though this thread. Maybe there’s an easy solution.
I just looked at Jason’s origenal post. The side bar menu is already at the top of his phone screen shot. So it’s a no brainer. Get rid of the huge buttons.
Sorry @Ontime but maybe you should take a better look at the home page on your phone. The buttons are already there.
That might work on your phone, but might not work on every phone. You need a certain amount of space around a tap point. Web designers have a nightmare job trying to cater to all the million combinations of devices and browsers out there.
Then of course that’s before you even start to consider accessibility.
I really like the “Upcoming Live Event” button/link on the dashboard. As a result, I have registered for 3 events and really excited to join. Big efficiency gain using the button/link to “Today’s Practice”. Reduces time and number of clicks needed to get going on practice! The dashboard is great on my laptop. I have not used a mobile phone to access it yet.
I can see there are mixed opinions about the recent update, and we appreciate everyone sharing their feedback.
One of the main reasons for the redesign was that many students were having trouble finding subscription settings and cancellation options in the previous dashboard. So far, the new design seems to have helped with that.
That said, we’ve noted all the feedback in this thread and will pass it along to our web design team and see if there are any small tweaks we can make to improve the experience for everyone.
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
