Underrated Guitarists

Hello everyone, I was recently having a discussion with a friend, and we were discussing who we think the most underrated guitarist of all time is.
My friend said he believes that Mark Knopfler is incredibly underrated, I disagree though. I think most people I know, while even if they don’t know Mark Knopfler by name, they almost certainly know at least one Dire Straits song.

I believe Terry Kath is one of, if not the most underrated guitar player of all time. Almost nobody I’ve met has known who Terry Kath was, and most of the younger people I’ve met have no idea who Chicago is.

Who do you think is the most underrated guitarist of all time?

I agree Roger. You are very underrated.
I would put you right up there with the greatest of all time. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

One that immediately springs to mind is Bill Nelson of ā€˜BeBop Deluxe’ fame. If you don’t know them or him you could be in for a treat, just work your way through their albums chronologically they are all good. Bill’s own catalogue of releases is huge.

Never heard of him but I’ll definitely be checking it out!

I think Rick Parfitt of status quo when he died in 2016 loads of people reckoned he was the best rhythm guitarist in the last 30 yrs maybe better than keef Richards also a good songwriter and Hank Marvin of the Shadow’s does not seem to get the recognition he deserves, and of course where would we be without Rogier!

Best thing that can come out of this thread, is that our good friend @roger_holland gets the recognition he deserves!
Any chance the mods could pin this topic to the top?
@Silvia80 I completely retract everything I said in my other response!

Seeing the title of the thread, I was going to say Terry Kath before I even read your post. I think a large part of the reason for that is that people who are familiar with Chicago think of horns, not guitar. But Kath was amazing.

I’m a big fanboy of Scotty Moore… especially on the early Elvis recordings. His work on the Sun label sessions was really ahead of his time!!!

Yes, I agree, most people think of the horn section when it comes to Chicago.

But damn man, Terry could really make a guitar sing! He definitely deserves more recognition, though I believe if he didn’t meet a tragic end in the late 70’s, he would be widely recognized as one of the greatest by all generations, like Van Halen, everyone knows Van Halen no matter your age.

Hey HEY …
I missed that email … you know, the one that says that sarcasm is allowed again  … be careful because DavidP the mod is nearby because he is probably feeling something because of what John said about Keith R above

…All the truly great Jazz players; largely unknown and probably the actual best guitar players of all time.
Ie. Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, Alan Holdsworth,

These guys are in a different league above even all the great rockers, including Hendrix, King, van Halen, Beck, Gilbert etc…

Cheers, Shane

Well he certainly is one of the more empathic and funny guitarists I kow!

There just are too many great players out there, …and in here.

The cool thing is thatwe have a lot of people to steal from, get inspired by and get encouragement from.

To follow the topic I’d go fo Rory Gallagher and Ray Phiri, the man behind the guitar sounds on Paul Simon’s Graceland. The way he made melodies, I hadn’t heard that before

Hendrix was a fan of Terry Kath.

An inconceivably dumb act.

Amazing guitarist, how many people know his name.

He is known to practice for around four hours before a show.

He inspired so many people, Mark Knopfler, I understand for one.

That is unfortunately correct. How anyone could be so careless is beyond me.

I heard that Hendrix once said ā€œTerry Kath is the best guitar player everā€ or something along those lines.
