Valve Amp - Recommendations

Happy to hear it! The Greenback sound is a little bit “sharp” to my ears, and this happens especially with very high gain. Still, a lot of classic rock recordings have been done with them.

You could also say my little experience is a bit stupid - because, yes, the speakers affect the tone a whole lot. But you would of course still dial the amp for the speakers you do play with. In other words, had I gone with Greenbacks in that video from the start, then probably I would have dialed the rest differently and it would have sounded fine.

If I do decide to get a 1x12 cab for my setup this is what my money will go to!

If they are listed in the order that you wrote about, I liked the sound of 1st and third, the 1st sounding warmer to my ears. I need to listen again with my monitors later though.

Above and beyond fire the post Kasper. nice playing too.

Thanks for doing this @Kasper I’ll have a proper listen when I get home. I put a Greenback in my Blues Junior. I also have V30’s in a 2x12 and it’s stock in the Orange 1x12. IIRC the Greenbacks are rated at 25w and the v30’s 60w which makes my 2x12 cab 120w on mono.

One more question from me. Did you try QC? Why Fractal FM3?

Hi,

I never played a QC unit, but I played some of the Neural DSP plugins, which sounds about the same. They are great as well. I’m a bit of a gear head, and I’ve tried many things. For modelling I’ve owned and used the Kemper, the Helix and now the Fractal stuff. It’s all great! You can get great tones from all of it!

However, and this is just personal preference, I must say that the Fractal stuff takes the win for me. I think the amp models sounds better than those in the Helix. But also the workflows in the software editor, the possibilities with the floor board that comes with it, the routing options, both internally in the presets but also in terms of the IO ports that the unit has. The Helix has a more intuitive workflow (for most people) but the Fractal allows for deep editing, while also sounding great at stock settings. Since I know a lot about tones by now, and since I’m technical by nature, the added complexity of the Fractal is not an issue for me… it’s a good thing!

But I need to stress again - we live in times where they ALL sound great, so in the end it comes down to what you have and what you personally decide to go with for whatever reason.

Despite my praise for the Fractal stuff, my current live rig is still based around a Helix… and it’s still fine! I might switch to Fractal for the band at some point, but if so that’ll just be GAS and my inability to resist the urge to “optimize” my gear for the ultimate tone, flexibility, ease of transport etc etc…

Thank you Kasper, I appreciate it!
