Vintage Club #38 with Richard | Reggae Skank

Hello Vintage clubbers. :guitar:
We have some summer sunshine extra goodies for you this July. Join Richard in this session and learn to ‘skank’.

Vintage Club #38 | Join Richard for a taste of sunshine as we explore the classic reggae skank rhythm using E-shape barre chords. We’ll look at the timing, muting and strumming techniques that give reggae its distinctive feel, all at a relaxed pace for beginner to intermediate players. As always, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and play along. Regulars and newcomers are very welcome.

We should cover this as it is most appropriate at the moment, my favourite Reggae artist by the way, along with Steel Pulse, UB40, Clint Eastwood and General Saint, and the king Bob Marley

Is the next Vintage Club on DUB?

Great song.
96 in the shade across huge swathes of the world right now, yes indeed. Though temperature in that song is but a minor item and a metaphor for a ‘hot topic’.
A reggae version of ‘Heatwave’?

I had the honor of seeing Steel Pulse and Third World years ago at the Fox Theatre in Detroit Michigan. Also saw Gregory Isaacs, Ziggy Marley, Rita Marley Black Uhuru and others Always my favorite summer vibe

Exciting news for Vintage Club #38.
The world premiere of four reggae songs composed especially for the occasion by your host Mr C.
We will use these as play-along backing tracks. Get your E-shape major and minor barre chords warmed up and ready!

I’ve signed up for this, even though it’s going to be at 4 am my time. Do we need to do anything to prepare? And what are we expected to do in it?

Thanks Richard. I just watched that and played along. I’ve got the E-shape under my belt, so all I need to do is wake up in time.

Richard, I really appreciate all the effort you put into these classes. I am learning so much with all your teaching efforts. I recognize the amount of time this requires! Thank you.

Thanks, Richard. It was hard getting up in time to do this, but it was worth it. I posted about it a few minutes ago, Mark's Log of Learning - #152 by MarkPeters and now I’m back off to bed.

Thanks Richard for the lesson, it was a fun lesson, I liked the play-along.

And what surprises me the most is how you always go the extra mile to prepare your lesson in advance.

Not all teachers are like that. You give me back faith in guitar education. Do you do the same for your private classes ? How does it work since no student is at the same level and study different things, it must be a lot of work :grimacing:

I admire your dedication to interrupting your sleep just to whack away at a few barre chords Mark, and I truly appreciate you doing so.

Thanks Mathieu.
Fun was the aim of the game.

And what surprises me the most is how you always go the extra mile to prepare your lesson in advance.

I did dedicate an especially large number of hours to prepping this one, in the form of composing the four songs. Once I got started I couldn’t stop and I ended up with fully fledged songs that I think and hope stand up in their own right.

But you give me back faith in guitar education. Do you do the same for your private classes ? How does it work since no student is at the same level and study different things, it must be a lot of work :grimacing:

In my private 1-to-1 lessons it is determined by a combination of what each student wants and what I think helps them progress based on their level and interests. I do spend a lot of time creating specific resources - which could be individualised practice routines, exercises, selected songs with tab / chord charts etc. Some of these I have in stock but most are tailor made for each student which I create either before or after the sessions and send via email as a follow up. Hopefully my testimonials attest to this and more.
