I am a 54-year-old new guitar player (started Justin’s program 3 weeks ago and LOVE IT as well as the Community Support). I just read some information, and while I cannot confirm if it is 100% factual, it encouraged me to keep trying no matter how difficult it seems and how lousy I sound in Beginner 1 level. It said if you practice anything (Guitar, another instrument, judo, etc…) for 18 minutes a day everyday it will add up to over 100 hours of practice in a year and it said you will be better than 90% of the people trying to learn the same skill. Not that I am trying to be better than anybody but it encouraged me to not quit and keep up the 18 minutes a day and even I will sound better (which you would never believe if you heard me currently) So I just wanted to pass that on!
Cheers,
Justin’s teaches 5 minutes of focused practice every day is better than 1 hour once a week. So 18 minutes gives you 3 5 minute sessions plus 3 minutes to noodle or practice a song.
Wow, great information - I am not there yet as far as the course but I love the recommendation because the 5 minute practice with a minute in between keeps me enjoying it instead of getting overwhelmed. Thank you!
Appreciate the tip - I am not too far yet since I can only get about 18 changes from A to D so I haven’t moved on, but I love the course and how everyone is so cool about responding in the community - it keeps me motivated.
I remember only getting around 12 the first time, I thought it was simply impossible I did almost 60 for A/D today after 3 months. I’ve done better before, too, I just had a long weekend break for family stuff so yeah, a little practice every day makes a huge difference.
18 min is a good start, it it happens regularly (6 times a week for example). With time you will extend this to 1h or more just because it will be more interesting things to explore and work on. The speed of the progression is individual because there is a lot of contributing factors. Being stubborn pays of for sure and I would say this is the most important trait for anyone learning anything that takes a lot of time and dedication.
The key thing here is that after only 3 weeks you’ll sound lousy and of course your chord changes will be slow.
Stick at your 18 minutes a day and you’ll see/hear your progress soar. Good luck.
Time really does add up quickly with some dedication and focus and your share here, Todd, really does reinforce both Justin’s teachings and the experience of so many on here.
Whilst we’d all love to practice all day every day, even a few minutes with an instrument in your hands provided benefit.
15 minutes of practice and only 3 minutes for a song?
Practice chord changes…in a song.
Practice a little lead line, technique and finger independence by playing it over the right chord…in a song
Have fun playing a song… more than once per session
I only do 20 minutes a day practice, but try to make it most week days. I am only on week 15 of learning the guitar but it is surprising how quick you do improve after the first few weeks. I sounded REALLY bad at first, but at least I can now recognise the song I am trying to play
Thank you for the response - I appreciate every tip I get - I am so happy I picked Justin’s course and the community is the best - everyone is so helpful!
Well then I have something going for me because stubborn I am - Thank you for the encouragement and I agree when it becomes fun and you really start to see the progress I can see how it can go to an hour or more - I really appreciate the response.
Wow 60 in 3 months that is great - I can see slight progress and that keeps me going - plus all the helpful support from the community! Thank you for replying.
