What do you think about this Katana Amp model?

Hi Guitar friends!

I was thinking about made an update from my old generic (and noisy) amp that came with the starter kit of my Guitar (Strat model), I was reading the here that a lot of people recomend Katana.

My budget its kind of limited right now, besides I only play in my home, so was thinking to give a try this Katana Mini Amp, what do you think? or do you recomend another model?

I mostly play rock (like AC/DC style)

Hi Vanessa,

I’m a big fan of the Katana’s in general as I’ve had a couple (MkI Artist & MkII 100) which have both been excellent, fully featured, guitar amps for me. Checking out this little guy, it seems like a great option to take away on holiday/road trip or for possibly doing just what you’ve indicated, i.e. playing at home, perhaps on the couch or something. Watching their promo video (with Andres from Sepultura :metal:  ) it certainly seems like it could be fun

I can’t speak for how it sounds (although the video does gives some hints that it might sound only just okay but that’s to be expected given its size & the feature set), however beyond that, for me at least, it lacks a couple of basic things that I would’ve expected in a product like this. They’re not major but just surprised me they weren’t included, being:

  • Bluetooth is missing (I suspect due to its drain on battery life). It appears you have to connect your phone via cable which could be a challenge for some newer phones or might require purchasing a USB-C to 3.5mm/mini jack adapter. Plus having Bluetooth would have made it more usable as a wireless speaker for just listening to music, etc.
  • It also appears to run on AA batteries rather than having its own internal battery that could be recharged, which I’m not super fond of. You can get an AC power supply but that appears to be sold separately?! That’s just odd to me :joy:

So, if it was me, I think this amp could be a good additional option if I wanted something portable for trips away, but ideally for playing at home I would try to save up a bit longer and get a second hand Katana MkII 50 or, better still, a 100. I haven’t tried a Gen 3 Katana but the previous models were great and if budget is a consideration, a good second hand older model would do the trick just fine.

Good luck on your hunt! If you do go with this amp, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it  :+1:

The mk3 Katana doesn’t have Bluetooth unless you add a dongle bit at least it’s an option

They’re cheap. That how I connect my laptop to my fender Champ 20 and Fender Acoustisonic 40.

The Boss one is $60, this amp is $99… (not that it works with this one)

$16. Works great.

Dongles are cheap, I have a Blackstar one that cost very little but my argument against them is they’re one more gadget to keep charged. I’d much prefer to have an amp with Bluetooth built in that connects to my phone every time the amp gets turned on without me even thinking about it. I guess it depends how often you play to a backing track as to whether you care but it was a high priority when I bought a new amp recently

Hey @vanessa_z ,

So, a few years ago I was in your position: looking for an inexpensive practice amp to use at home. After looking around online, I settled on the Katana Mini. However, when I went to my local music store to buy one, I decided not to get it after trying it out. First, it just felt very cheap: plasticky and very light. I know that’s subjective, but that’s how it seemed to me. Second, and more important, I didn’t like the sound much: kinda small and tinny. I know it’s a small amp, but I’d heard other small amps that sounded better.

One other thing: it does not have reverb. I want to have reverb on a practice amp like this. It does have delay and maybe you can get that to sound like reverb a bit, I’m not sure.

I ended up getting a Roland Micro Cube, which I really like actually. They don’t make them anymore, though.

Anyway, that’s my experience. I would recommend you try one out before buying it.

Katana Mini I think was a good option too but what I did like from a review I saw in youtube was that when you connect the amp with the power supply it had a little noise (with the batteries it looks like the issue is not present)

I decided for Fender after I saw this cool video for this four brands of amps, really cool the testing made with different sounds and effects. And I found a good price in amazon for it

I had been using my new amp for several days now, and Im really happy with the sound, been playing a little bit of RHCP :stuck_out_tongue:

Has good sound for playing at home with nice volume, test it with my distorsion pedalboard. Has Gain, Treble, Bass controls and Overdrive button. Has a Aux port and headphones port too.
