What Looper

Hi
I’m looking for a looper that I can add and remove loops from. Let me explain, I loop a drum beat, then a bass loop, then a backing vocal loop, then I start playing guitar over the top as my main performance. I then want to remove the drums for a few bars and then put them back without losing the bass loop and backing vocal loop. Can this be done with any type of looper?

Pretty sure not, you’ll need 2 loops/tracks for that I am guessing

Its not uncommon but the lower end entry ones wont do it I suspect

The new Ed sheran loopers look good

I was looking at the Shearan X today, but its not clear if that does what i need it too either

The looperX absolutely will, its how Sheeran does his shows (it has 4 independent tracks)

It is a big and expensive beast though

The looper plus (the smaller 2 pedal one) has 2 tracks

They are not the only option, Boss etc have comprehensive sets of looper pedals, but they are new and have been built to do this kind of thing

Yes @RobDickinson is right. You will need a looper with multiple independent tracks for this.

How many tracks will depend on what you are trying to do. To me it sounds like you need two tracks.

Many standard one-track loopers will let you “undo” an overdub, but that is usually a single layer, and it has to be the last thing you recorded. This won’t work for what you described.

If you are looking at turning on and off drum patterns, maybe look at looper pedals with onboard drum patterns, such as the Boss RC-10R, or consider a separate pedal like the Beat Buddy, Digitech Trio+, or Digitech Sdrum.

The other thing to look at is an Ableton setup on a computer.

Cheers,

Keith

If you are looking for drums and bass and then additional loops (rhythm) Trio Plus is the way to go. Teach it the rhythm and it will lay down the drum and bass, with multiple style and genre. Worth a look.

Hi Mutt
I use the electro harmonix looper It is way beyond my capabilities, but does have the function you desire.

The new Valeton VLP-200 looper pedal will do what you want. A dual looper with built in drum machine.

You’ll need to add a foot switch if you want to turn the drums on and off though. The FS5U in the video is an unlatching/momentary footswitch.

The sonicake is half the price.

That seems well priced!

With the emphasises on the word ‘any’ - then a software / DAW option surely would be the easiest method here, by just setting up individual tracks for each part. Not that I have used it myself in this manner but ISTR that the in-built looper in Amplitube may also allow control of several independent loops

Do you intend to use this for recording or just practice?
If you want to use drum effects from the looper pedal, then it is worth bearing in mind that not all drum loops are created equal - the built in ones on some are a bit tinny and synthetic, and may have your teeth itching after a while.
Andertons do some good reviews, and I can recall a recent one comparing a couple of multi-fx units which contained drum loops, and one was far more realistic than the other (I guess as it had been taken from real drums!)

I have a Valeton GP200, and the drums aren’t great, but just about good enough to practice with.
