As a beginner Iām suspecting that for me itāll be Wonderwall, what about you?
Jim Croceās Operator. Fingerstyle.
Django Reinhartās āMinor Swingā⦠3 years so far & I still havenāt mastered it! ![]()
Tod
Pink Floyd - āWish You Were Hereā played as closely as possible to the original recording. The timing changes and rhythm is not the easiest and it changes. I would still need to spend time on it to get it good again.
This one. I actually never finished it. It took me 2 months to just learn first 4 pages⦠in a very slow tempo.
Interesting question.
Iām still a beginner, so most new songs take quite a long time for me to learn ![]()
But thereās one classical song that accompanies me for a long time now and is always lurking in the background to get some practice.
Itās Caprice No. 24 by N. Paganini.
This one is waaaaaay above my head, of course, but I really would love to be able to play some parts of it one day.
It is a theme with variations. So I can pick some of the easier parts and try them bar by bar. Sometimes thatās only one bar per day ![]()
But thatās OK for me.
Itās on my list of ādreamer songsā.
It is also great to practice lots of techniques, like picking individual strings, string skipping or playing legato.
This song is not the kind of music I usually listen to and would like to play. It reminds me of my dad who sadly is no longer with me. He played this classical masterpiece on violin. ![]()
Iām trying to play Love in Vain - Keth Richardās fingerstyle. 12:8 time with a few 13th notes added to a bar here and there. Iāve got the intro and first verse down. Gimme another yearā¦https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4x_oSD8ZZU
Paul Wellerās You do Something to Me. Transposed from piano to guitar. To play and sing took me 9 months. Itās a sound check song now. Iām currently learning Crossroad Blues. I think that will set a new record!
M&O Blues by Willie Brown. Still struggling with getting the right turn-around in the righ place in the song.
There are others that I have not kept up on that have been around longer, but decided those shouldnāt count. I can basically play M&O with just a couple small spots that I donāt play the right stuff. You wouldnāt notice if you didnāt know the song.
This is pretty close to what I am trying to do. His turn-arounds are not as mixed and a bit easier in a couple places. He is not doing some bends I do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3_ph8xhwwY
Sorry to hear that
I hope everything is ok for you ![]()
Wonderwall is definitely up there for me as well. Itās not that itās the hardest song ever, I just started it too early in journey. When youāve got used to simple strumming patterns, jumping to a sixteenth note, fairly complex pattern at a decent speed isnāt easy.
By the time Iād learned it I didnāt want to play it any more
I can see that happening, the strumming looks insane to me, imagine having to memorize all the strumming pieces of this song. Justin have a 30+ minutes lesson of this song and itās scary ![]()
Thank you for your kind words, Renan ![]()
Music always helps

For me itās nothing else matters by Metallica. The chords are very achievable to learn, but the solos and breaks take quite a lot of practice for mastery. Iām still not there yet after a year of trial. If youāre new to playing songs start with something easy that has about 4 chords and easy strumming to build confidence. Overwhelming songs destroy confidence. I just played an open mic last night and for the most part I played 4 chord songs that were easy to remember. I didnāt play wonderwall, but the crowd appreciated āDonāt Look Back In Angerā by Oasis. That one is a little more complex and was my first time trying it from memory.
More complex than Wonderwall? Thatās beyond imagination, thatās talent area ![]()
Iām very picky about songs, I donāt think thereās is much songs at Grade 2 which uses the new chords, the Stuck 3&4.
Do you guys think I should go and face Wonderwall or itās better to do it later? I mean the original record, no simple version.
If you want to learn those chords, Do you know what I mean by Oasis has the same chord progression but easier strumming (capo on fret 2) - it has the added benefit of getting fewer people rolling their eyes when you say youāre going to play it ![]()
You might find fewer lessons for that song but I posted a video when I was learning it a year or so ago Mattās Learning Log - #96 by mattswain
I donāt get why people made Wonderwall a meme, itās a fine song, maybe not beautiful but itās a ok song, at least for me.
Any song that pushes your skills or is even at a level you havenāt quite reached takes a long time to learn. But those dreamer songs also help with developing the necessary skills. The song that took me longest to learn start to video in recent years was The Ponyman by Gordon Lightfoot. Took about 20 months, albeit not continuous practise. It was a dreamer song for me so I kept going back and joy oh joy when I finally was able to play it. I also wrote about it here.
When I first started playing guitar, I decided that I will have accomplished what I set out to do on this instrument when I can sing and play Jim Croce. Have not gotten there yet certainly a lot closer.
