Why Does My USB Mic Work Perfectly in Audacity But Sound Dull in My DAW?

Hello

I am using a USB mic (Blue Yeti) & recording fine in Audacity but when I switch to my DAW (I use Reaper); my recordings sound weak / muffled even though the mic and USB connection are the same. :slightly_smiling_face:It’s frustrating because the audio sounds great in one program but not the other. :innocent:

I have double-checked input levels, sample rate settings & tried enabling “monitor in real time,” but nothing fixes the sound quality. I am now wondering if it’s related to DAW-specific plugins / driver preferences. :thinking:I also tested other input options & the issue still persists. Checked Beginner Video and Audio Setup - Help for reference.

By the way, as I was troubleshooting, I found myself curious; what is Agentic AI and how might intelligent tools one day help diagnose these kinds of recording issues automatically?

Thank you!! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m no expert, Sopelos, and never used such a USB mic. I’d check the driver for the mic and if not ASIO driver perhaps try that.

It happens to me as well when he takes the built in mic from my webcam as input device.
It’s a lower quality mic and usually fools me for a few seconds.
Are you 100% sure it’s your usb mic being used as device?

As David hinted, Install trhe ASIO4ALL drivers, they have the best quality/latency rate and usually work for many USB input devices.

It features a tool as well to select input and output device; handy if you want to use a separate mic as input and a headset from your computer as headphones,…but not its built in mic.

This is a great quote where “your usb mic” can be replaced by so many things.

We all have observational bias, looking for supporting evidence and far less likely to recognize contravening evidence.

Particularly when we are noobs we tend to focus on what we recognize while being unable to contemplate the specifics of the unknown.

Thanks for the reminder,
