Will from Kansas City, MO

Like a lot of newbies I bounced around a little before landing on Justin Guitar. I’ve been at it for around a year, but only at JG for six months or less. The structure here really suits me, I like the clear modules, the thorough but laid back approach. My attitude as a retired 50-plusser is that there’s no need to burn through the lessons. I’ll sometimes linger on a lesson for more than a few days…use it as my noodling time, while also practicing fundamentals, chord changes, strumming, etc. I’ve learned that my brain takes a day or two to process the information, but if I stick with it I’ll get there. And some of the skills develop over time. I’ve noticed my five songs from Grade 1 are sounding way better than when I first learned them. At least not as awkward :face_with_diagonal_mouth: Also, just recently I’ve been able to sing along while playing, and it took me a good while to be able to sing at all while playing. I’m really enjoying the process and awesome to be part of a community! Will

Hey Will, that’s awesome. I started in my 50s and accidentally started singing and playing after avoiding singing because everyone said it was a lot harder than just playing. After I realized I could do both, there was no holding me back.

I’m originally from Kansas, but live a long ways away from there now. Good luck and look forward to hearing more from you.

Hello Will & Welcome from a Kansas native!!!

Born in Wichita, moved to Overland Park as a young child then to New Mexico because of health reasons… I have some good memories of Kansas City!

Good to hear that you’re doing well with Justin’s Method… stick with it & you will be playing very well in time!!!
This Community is a great place to share your guitar experiences & find answers to questions that arise from time to time!

Good luck & keep it FUN! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thanks Tony! Learning to play Johnny Cash’s version of ‘Hurt’ really broke that damn open for me. I went from barely being able to sing along, to feeling almost comfortable. Still not there completely, but it’s a start.

Nice meeting you Tod! I’ve often imagined how awesome it would be to strum guitar while looking out at those desert skies. I’m absolutely having a blast with the process. Hope you’re keeping healthy out there in NM. Will

I appreciate that Ontime. I’ve been browsing around for a while now, and it is certainly massive! I figure that the further I get in the process the more having some connection with others is an important part of not only learning but helping others as I progress. Cheers! Will

Welcome to the community Will. It’s a great way to keep the brain cells active in retirement!

Keep singing… your voice is a muscle that will get stronger the more you use it.

Thanks! I’m learning that neuroplasticity is an actual thing. Maybe I can keep my marbles together for a few extra years. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Thanks Silva! I’ll definitely stick around. I think it’s awesome being part of a community that shares the same passion for not only guitar, but music overall. I appreciate it!

Thanks Steve. The younger me would have tried to hit the high spots and keep it pushing. The older and (hopefully) wiser version is more about paying attention to the details and really just have fun along the way. I appreciate it.

I’ve been using Justin Guitar off and on for over a year. Recently I decided to supplement Justin with private lessons. It’s a great combination and it provides me motivation. It’s nice to have someone right there to ask questions of. And, I just bought a Martin SC-13E, so I have even more motivation to practice. And I agree that it is very satisfying to notice when you have made progress. The great thing about Justin vs. private lessons is the community of players at all levels. It is very inspiring to read about others’ musical journeys. It really helps on those days when I am not feeling great about my progress. Thanks, all, for being my inspiration!
