Wings of Pegasus exposes a miming Taylor Swift

Backup vocals perhaps in certain circumstances may be ā€˜passableā€™.
The lead vocal though - never.

Cheers, Shane

Iā€™m left wondering how this video and critique of Taylor Swift ended up on Justin Guitar?

Iā€™d think her fans are familiar with her live performances, at least from YouTube, and have heard more than 1 version of the same song over the years. Iā€™d say they had the means to check what they bought the tickets for well in advance.

But yeah, in an ideal world all acts should specify how much of their performance is live or a pre-recorded backing track.

Weā€™re in the ā€˜just chattingā€™ section.
Anything goes (well, almost )
This is remarkably relevant, as itā€™s music related and some of us have been rumbled miming :open_mouth:

If this is true, why does this seem bother you so much. You should be spending your time playing/practicing your guitar not on youtube watching videos of some guy trying to defame someone you claim youā€™re not a fan of.

Iā€™m pleased to announce that this revelation has neither helped nor hindered my guitar learning.

Shane, thanks for the further explanation.

Yes, indeed, the bits that are shown do overlay more readily. But they arenā€™t exactly the same, which is what Iā€™d expect for the exact same vocal track.

Now, maybe you would expect some tiny differences, because the same vocal track is being re-recorded and maybe these differences are caused by that. That is where a control analysis would be useful. Analyze both mimed and live performances (where you know which is which) and show what the various curves look like. He repeatedly states that you donā€™t expect any matching at all for non-mimed performances and this seems counterintuitive to me, which is why I would like to see it demonstrated with a control.

Btw, do you know why there are huge gaps in the various curves shown in the video? It would be more convincing if he could show just more than just a tiny snippet (like a few notes) at a time.

Hereā€™s a thought

If this was business organised miming on a global level, would they not be savvy enough to alter the recordings at each venue so they were not identical, Would not take much to engineer.

Donā€™t do X Factor donā€™t Swift and donā€™t know WOP.

Just dropped in between playing.

Frankly, I think Shane has every right to decide for himself how he spends his time.

Just to say I do think you could have vented your opinion in a nicer and maybe more relevant way.

While I agree with you for the most part, maybe the concern would be if itā€™s ok for one of the biggest artists in the world to mime then that might be the green light for it to become the norm?

(To be clear I wasnā€™t the one watching the video and I donā€™t really care Iā€™m just offering a different perspective on it)

It is the norm. Things like Autotune, double tracking etc being used as everyday tools in studios do you really think Taylor Swift is the only super star to be using Backing tracks in live concerts. I be surprised if it wasnā€™t the norm for most concerts since the 90ā€™s.

This made me laugh out loud :laughing:ā€¦Sorry I just see in in my mind Shane , is that love for the blues real? like that bright and beautiful guitar playing while you secretly spend most of your time with practicing and listening to Mrs. Swift :joy:

Thanks Rick, and you have a good pointā€¦but I also find it admirable how much time and words Shane puts into this and gives his fingers a break from practicing Taylorā€™s S Blues all day :sunglasses:

Greetings

Iā€™m no Swiftie at all and I donā€™t see it as desirable to use all technical options to polish music up to a level it gets exchangeable and loses all character.
But maybe it should be seen, that those ā€œSuperstarsā€ have to deliver 120% in the expectation of their paying fans, who pay hundreds of dollars for a ticket to get an exeptional experience . They are forced to deliver top performances at every concert. T.S. gave/gives 152 concerts in a period from 03/23 until 12/24. I guess thatā€™s extremely exhausting (not only) for the voice.
There might be good and bad days. What happens, if the performance is substandard?
Everyone shouts how bad it wasā€¦
With all the technical options they maybe ā€œguarantieā€ an equal experience for everyone.
Just a thoughtā€¦

Although I have to admit, the more I get into playing music, the more I appreciate ā€œrealā€ music.
So much trash out there!
Itā€™s the point, where I ask myself, if Iā€™m only getting old or more selective :joy:.

Same hereā€¦ Fortunately Iā€™m in no way forced to listen to any artist I do not appreciate, not to mention going to concertsā€¦ :unamused:

This! Although I assume, Shane is bothered, because the ā€œfakeā€ isnā€™t openly communicated.

Exactly!.. I therefore respect his point of view, as well as everyone elseā€™s posting in this topic.

From an unashamed Swiftie: she can sing, play guitar and write songs with hooks that many songwriters can only dream of.

Iā€™m not a Taylor Swift fan.
But when I was asked to teach a song of hers to a student, I checked out some live solo acoustic performances.
She can sing.
She can play.
She can write songs.
She can write hit songs.
She is hugely successful.
I havenā€™t really watched footage of live shows but from comments made it seems she can dance.
Iā€™m sure she can command a stage and has a huge presence as an entertainer.

Iā€™m not a fan - as in she isnā€™t on my listening list.
But Iā€™m a fan of music and songs and it is obvious she is creative and productive and successful all in one.

There must be hundreds of artists using this behind-the-scenes trickery at live shows.
Especially shows that last several hours in tours that last for several months across multiple continents.

Come on.

ps
I am not a fan of the confrontational stance over some incidental trifle in life either.

Relax everybody.

Nobody died.
Nobody even got hurt.

If a Taylor Swift fan feels eternally ripped off knowing that she used pre-recorded tracks as a back up in case her voice was not up to par on a given day, then Iā€™m sure they have an outlet to share their disappointment with her or her management.
