As an old time fan of pink Floyd I rushed over the E minor pentatonic scale to try to learn this riff. Then I noticed that the coordination parts I was having most trouble with were actually part of the scale. Went back to practice and now this looks a bit easier.
Still this Module 8 is quite a step up from the Module 7… but its always great to have new things to learn and practice.
As up to the video critics, I think it’s the first riff that is too complicated to just follow the video while trying to learn how to play. You should watch the video a few times to understand the playing “strategy” and then follow the tabs.
My personal notes for this riff, I think this will get most new players through a lot but they will need to double check chords and timing.
Each note is designated by fret then string IE: 3-6 is the third fret six (E) string. “o” = open string. “D” (down) and “U” (up) indicate strumming direction.
Emin7 is played with the first finger on the 5th, second on the 4th, third on the second and fourth on the first. Check Justin’s video on the Stuck 3&4 cords for the correct way to play each.
“Gstuck34” is second finger on the 6th, third on the second and fourth on the first. (this one is a bit unique)
A7sus4 is First finger on the fourth, second on the third, third on the second and fourth on the first.

Listen to the video for the correct timing or listen to the original song.
This video REALLY needs to be re-done. He rushes after step ten and changes from chord number to note constantly. Pick a lane Justin.
In my experience, the app as is currently designed is not good for this kind of practice. It does not have any looping functionality right now. (Although the developers could certainly add that functionality… And probably should!)
At the moment, I think the best app for really focussing on learning riffs is Moises.
I have been working on this for a while, however I have not been ‘working on it’ so with my new practice schedule this week I really wanted to break it down.
I think that the first part is ok, however here is my dilema. I have been playing this on how it sounds and comparing it back to the JS lesson, and reading the TAB.
But I am moving into wanting to understand and know more, and so I am working on this and actually counting the timing out and having a bit of a hard time. I am working on 16th notes now so I know there is a long way to go.
I am working on this at 30bpm on the metronome, and I have 16th divisions setup, but they can be a little distracting, so right now I am just going super slow, and counting out the beats.
My main question would, until I am comfortable with 16ths, should I continue to count every note, and keep my strumming hand moving in 16ths at this super slow pace?
Or is it just as beneficial to count out on the strummed/ plucked notes on the rhythm?
Hello, when starting the riff, I use my second finger to play the first three fretted notes. I know Justin Guitar used the first finger to play the second fret, so I am curious if I should change it to match his example.
Nothing wrong with your method, but, be advised, at some point you will probably run into another song where your chosen fingering will feel awkward. There are lots of songs where you will play that same set of notes alot faster (google “G-run guitar”) and your chosen fingering would likely slow you down and/or feel awkward.
No matter how much i practice i cant get the rhythm inbetween my notes. And on top of that my guitar tutor tells me it’s not right and shows me something different,. So I’m stuck. And basically keep replaying re listening and practicing.
I would suggest just putting it aside for a while, and coming back to it later rather than thinking of it as defeat. Unless by now you really can’t stand it. I did that and when I came back to it after getting to the end of grade 2 found it much more enjoyable.
Can’t say the same for finger style happy birthday which I really detest.
