Would you say this song is in 12/8?

I fingerpick three notes each beat I tap with my foot and seems to work fine; the D DU DU pattern seems to fit well too… What do you say?

12/8. That’s what I’m counting as well @Silvia80 :slightly_smiling_face:

I also count 12/8 here. Nice song, by the way.

I’m hearing a completely ordinary 4/4 beat

I’m also hearing 4/4. The kick on beats 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, HiHat tapping out 8th notes. (But I’m a total noob to drums so might be wrong )

Definitely 4/4.
12/8 would usually give you more of a triplet feel, like blues, or swing, which this song doesn’t have.

I’m hearing 4/4 too, with a mix of 1/16th and 1/8th notes in some measures, if I focus on the piano/keyboard parts. Not an expert, but this is an interesting test of my ear training, so I will throw this out there

Thank you everyone!

That underlying melodic motif is misleading me I think…@JokuMuu @Lisa_S there must be some kind of hidden swing going on that not anyone can perceive :joy:

Now… wouldn’t it be an interesting experiment if I arranged it in 12/8?

Yes, definitely 4/4. As @twistor59 said, the drums give it away. But also the 8th and 16th note argeggios on the piano.

Cheers,

Keith

Yep, 4/4 time.
The main melodic motif is 8 notes spread over 2 beats and ending on beat1, so 16th notes with a count of e + a 4 e + a 1
There are variations of it with 8th notes.

Yep, that sounds like a great exercise!

On second thoughts…no, I won’t do that :see_no_evil_monkey:

I think I’m tapping correctly, only I have to fingerpick 4 notes not 3…I will try with my regular pima.

I think for me it’s different. After the latest Vintage Club I already noticed, I simply can’t count properly anymore. No, just kidding.

Maybe my ear was just hearing what wasn’t there as I was looking for 12/8? But nervermind, it’s great other fellows could jump in an pull us back in the right direction.

I agree… I was searching for 12/8 confimation as well, when listening… Confirmation bias, it seems  Time to get more familiar with counting in 16th notes :musical_notes:

Afraid so :see_no_evil_monkey:

Me too … because I had put in my head it was 12/8, it just seemed right while fingerpicking in the air :grimacing:
In my head I also compared it with So this is Christmas…but when you listen to this last one you hear the difference…it’s as Shane says

I hope you didn’t mind practicing a bit with me!

This is in 4/4 way nicer to count with

But Rogier … @roger_holland that’s an easy case… What he plays there quite clearly screams 4:4… even it’s very fast. …

Silvia’s song had a bit of an unusual, summerly flair… and I guess it could even sound better in 12/8… … so, maybe our imagination wanted to go there :slightly_smiling_face:

Ladies, @Silvia80 and @Lisa_S , 16th notes rhythm exercises start at lesson 7 in Justin’s rhythm book, maybe we should form a study group … :orange_book: :closed_book: :blue_book: :guitar:

Everybody is commenting on the time signature, whilst ignoring the obvious underlying ‘cry for help’ of a poor soul caught in the death clutches of 1970/80’s string-drenched euro-nostalgia
“Aiutoooo…!”
Send me your coordinates… I’ll send a St. Bernhard :musical_notes:

I love that idea! I’m up for it.

Hi Silvia,

I’m working on this song right now :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Justin says it is in 12/8 or what the tabs says 6/8 …Or am I misunderstanding you

Well, I’m the worst advisor in this area because I don’t count while playing, not even while practicing, never have. I obviously tried it with Justin in the beginning because I thought I wouldn’t play Rhythm well otherwise, but counting and stroke simply don’t work for me… and apparently I don’t miss it either. There is a drum tapping (nowadays more and more often a foot tap) or a bass or the original in my head, but it has never reached four

Greetings and have an nice playing day :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Edit: Quote "or am I misunderstanding you "
 Yes I did

Ooo I think you picked up the Christmas song and then noticed that it was not 12/8 that you were doing with that Italian song… (and so I didn’t have to read it 3 times but 4 times)… Well in any case that Christmas song indicates that you can often see/count things differently…go with the flow
(stupid stupid stupid…I told myself “stay away from this”)

I just hope the “happy xmas war is over” info is of some use to someone
