Sniff, sniff- the distinct whiff of…
Lat’s blame the ‘metronome’ for the poor timing?!?
Actually, I’m good with the wobble description (You should have heard my 16th pumping attempt which was discarded ). A year ago it would have taken me a couple of days to prepare this; a couple of years ago, a week or two. It’s progress, if you count churning out the same kind of stuff faster as progress
But thank you for the listen, comments and greetings.
(and I will talk to the band of course!)
@Eddie_09 Cheers, man. I might give Refugee a whirl one of these days
Good Job @brianlarsen played and sang with a lot of confidence and freedom and a hint of cheeky grin. Nice job, what’s that guitar? I’m such a gear head
Cheers, Bob
Most of us are here for the enjoyment, so it’s good to try and smile every now and again
That Harley Benton was a spontaneous birthday present to myself last year, a week after declaring I’d never need another guitar
It’s my go-to these days, even though I’m more sentimental about my other three.
Superb piece of kit for under £300. The only thing to be aware of (if it’s important to you), is that the colour is a bit light-sensitive, so the 'Daphne blue’ is now slipping into the dusty grey scale…
Makes not odds to me, as I’m likely to deface her with a black marker pen at the next string change anyway
Always enjoyable to catch a recording of you playing and singing with your band, Brian.
Learning songs faster, even if similar songs, does sound like (enviable) progress to me. (enviable) as it still takes me an age to learn a song, assuming I am able to actually learn it, plenty of ‘simple’ songs defeat me. Maybe that’s why I have wandered into the land of noodle.
Well Brian this must be the second song that I’ve seen you play that I have heard before and that’s thanks to Bob I think you played and sung that really well. I’m impressed with your ability to learn songs faster, it takes me ages to learn a song and the lyrics. If you’re taking requests these days I might throw in Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl.
It’s a shame this track is unlisted, especially from someone that has found their own voice on the instrument. I didn’t see it on my morning feed, which is a real shame. I do like to watch your videos on the big screen. As a result I didn’t give it a fair listen and probably won’t offer a fair comment, since my name was brought up, I will offer a few words.
Yeah, if you listen to a lot of music (as I do) and are on a never ending search for inspiration, ear fatigue can set in. Also, becoming a better musician is akin to being a better writer or speaker, condense your delivery with as little rambling and repetition as possible (we are in an election cycle here, so the rambling speeches are out of control). There is a time for extended play (for drama and other elements) and a time to cut things short. Defaulting to the latter is pretty good plan, IMO.
Cheers @brianlarsen interesting stuff. I was just wondering as it looked fenderish but I know there are so many strat copies around. I have a Cort one. Sounds like the Harley is great value, always been curious about those.
@DavidP Cheers man
You an’ me is doing this guitar journey the proper way-
focusing on what we enjoy
Nothing wrong with noodles.
… and yes, I watched that Bill Bailey episode when I recorded your dystopian birthday song a while ago
@Socio Thank you… I think. Here you go.
Don’t do it again
@CT
Thanks Clint, I think we have a lot in common when it comes to expressing individuality and following our own paths. Almost all my Youtube videos are public and I’m not really self-conscious. On the other hand, I have the occasional post where it is only really relevant to the community here and will have little meaning/value to my friends or family and I post them unlisted. I take your point though and have this morning shared a guitar exercise as public and kept it even shorter!
Cheers @BobW72, from what I’ve seen the majority of reviews for the company are that they essentially provide good value
I’m happy and will never need another guitar
Another great song Brian. Yes the ability to learn songs faster is definitely a sign of increasing ability as I think one starts to have a feeling for what the next chord is/might be and can then concentrate on other elements.
Loved your version there Brian. Super vocal and you’ve got that fingertip strum style on electric down to a fine art. Well done.
@sairfingers Cheers Gordon, and welcome back to this sceptered isle
I saw a flurry of posts by you recently and am hoping you don’t burn out, trying to catch up.
I’ve given up trying to follow all the new stuff and am just trying to keep my head above water whilst sill playing
Hope you’re rejuvenated and will be sharing a campfire singalong before you re-immerse yourself in the blues…
@Digger72 Cheers Stephen,
I was more curious about TP than a fan
Darkness rules…
James (@Socio) recently requested this song in a comment here
Now, U2 are a bit like Marmite for me, but eliciting both responses simultaneously
I had never heard of this early song but gave it a spin and found that (silly/jokey lyrics aside) the main feature seems to lie in the Edge’s rhythm work. He varies it a fair bit in the studio version, as well as in live performances, but it I found that simple eighths strumming, leaving out the 1, 7 and 8 was a fair approximation for my pay grade.
Only problem with that is, it makes singing over it a pain in the proverbials. It’s just next level rubbing your tummy and patting your head simultaneously…
This is not a proper cover version, but just an exercise in rhythm and vocals.
I kept it to a simple Bm Em A backing track on my Trio+, taking liberties with the lyrics.
Sure, what else would I be doing, with two open mics to prepare for, a Chris collaboration bubbling away in my DAW and visitor from Ireland arriving tomorrow?
No more requests please. (I’m easily distractable)
Hi Brian,
Never heard of this song,…but I’m certainly not the biggest fan of this band with only a CD in my closet (which you probably don’t like I guess),… …but this sounds like a nice song and I love it played leadback (really) and sung, …Bono and socio-…paths ,…nice combination…
And you do challenge with looking for distractions, don’t you
Greetings,…
Same as Rogier with the lack of familiarity, which is surprising as I’ve spent a fair bit of time listening to U2 down the years.
All sounded good to me and it seems you’re procrastinating with what you should be doing with little exercises like this, I can relate only too well
I’ll have a think for some other requests to test your resolve!
You mentioned the Trio+ on my AVOYP recently, I wasn’t aware of the band capability with it, that’s some intelligent piece of kit, I take it it’s a hearty recommendation? Fortunately atm it seems to be out of stock around the interwebs at the moment
Well done Brian, I hadn’t heard that song in decades. It was a B-Side song that apparently after the initial performance of the song Bono said that it was the first and probably last time they would play that song but it went on to become a regular encore song.
You certainly demonstrated that you can confidently rub your tummy and pat you head simultaneously. Respect for turning around a rendition so quickly especially when its a song that you’ve never heard before!
A lot of positives came out of that AVoYP, you got a good rhythm and vocal workout to get you in shape for the next open mic and you ignited Mark’s (@Notter) Trio+ acquisition syndrome.
