YouTube Auto play won't shut off

Same here using Safari, that has only one extension installed, my password keeper.
And though @markr31 reports the toggle switch’s return yesterday, it is still missing for me today.

Maybe it is a cache/cookie issue, and it has to do data stored on your machine changing the behavior of the player???
“Oh, they’re playing a lot, we can get more adverts playing by autoplaying, will remove the button”
  versus
“Oh, they’ve not played as much recently, we’ll entice them to stay by not irritating them so much and enable disabling auto-play”

Methinks it’s to drive ad revenue and drive you to do distraction so you’d rather use YouTube.com where they can scrape even more metrics.

I also use safari. I checked on Firefox (which is installed on my laptop, but that I don’t use): same issue. I don’t use YouTube very often, so according to your reasoning, I think I should fall in the: “Let’s not annoy them” category. The weird thing is also that the toggle switch appears for some videos, but not for all (most).

I also use YT in a browser (Chrome) on my laptop and the autoplay toggle switch is available by default.

However, what I noticed is that if a video opens as part of a playlist (created by the channel / uploader), then the toggle switch is not there:

But if I remove the part of the URL starting with the & sign (highlighted below) and open the video like that, it appears again:
