Zephyr In the House From the Sunshine State

Zephyr here, I was referred here to the site by my pal GROK back in October. I’m what some might call a new old player. I played as a kid for a couple of years until age 14 when I had an unfortunate accident that damaged a couple of fingers on both hands. Last year I discovered that Tony Iommi, the guitarist of Black Sabbath, lost the tips of his right-hand middle and ring fingers in a factory accident at the age of 17 and he made playing a priority despite his injury. I am retired now so I got to thinking along with being inspired by Iommi that I can resurrect my passion for the guitar. So here I am.

There’s Django Reinhardt too.

A warm welcome to our Community Zephyr! I’m curious to know, what is the State of Sunshine?
I’m sure you’ll find your unique way to guitar learning, despite the challenges and difficulties. Make sure you stick around with us and share, we’ll smile with you at your small and big victories and cheer you up through the struggles; that’s what we are here for: sharing the enthusiasm for learning this wonderful instrument called Guitar - Chitarra in my language :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Welcome to the community. I have a couple of brothers in the Sunshine State. One in Sarasota and one in Jacksonville. Look forward to hearing more from you. Open Tunings are an option to look at along with blues slide in open tuning. I injured one of my fretting fingers some years back and couldn’t play my usual guitar so took to open G with a slide. Fun fun fun.

Hi James, welcome to the community.Retirement is a great time to learn to play guitar. As you learn more about guitar you will find ways to play what you want on the guitar. If you ever find a song too challenging for you, feel free to ask questions in the community…

Hi James, welcome. Good you want to resurrect your passion for the guitar. Last year or the previous one I went to a Colombian food festival in a nearby town and the frontman of one of the bands playing had a prosthetic hand and with it was holding the plectrum to strum and sing. You definitely can play. It will be your playing, your way. Musical theory can help you finding chord grips that can work for you. Keep enjoying your retirement.

Hello Zephyr.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
