63rd Street Blues (original)

Hey folks, I’ve finally written my first instrumental !

I feel like this is a huge milestone for me after BLIM.

No, I’m not celebrating my 63rd birthday. The title “63rd Street Blues” is just a little wink to my inspiration — I wanted to play around with those sweet blues harmonies built on 6ths and 3rds.

My local teacher gave me that homework and it took me way longer than I’d like to admit to compose these two choruses. I wrote everything in Guitar Pro and tried to outline the chord tones of every chord like Justin discuss in Unit 6. :exploding_head:

I even started a third chorus, but time was running out for my homework. Still, I think the melody has a nice, catchy vibe. It’s not too bad for a first step into the world of composing.

That was really good, I like that you’ve played with a clean tone and added some great embellishments to it. Slides , double stops and that sort of thing are always a great way of getting feel and texture into your composition. Well done it’s a 10/10 from me for sure!

Super tone, a cheerful blues melody, lots to love, Mathieu.

Watching how people grow as blues players through BLIM makes me want to BLIM myself . . . perhaps when I get myself right back into playing (which is currently better than it has been for a while)

Really nice! If I may make a suggestion: you should try adding a turnaround – it adds some structure, a kind of sign-post for the listener, which I think would add to the piece.

Anyway, I thought some of your phrases were really good. Bravo!

Night and day from your BLIM intro video. All those hours of practice have really paid off. You have come along way my friend and can definately tick off a few of those goals that you set yourself over the past year. Very well done, bravo.

Hey Mathieu,

Well done done man!
Some nice phrasing, and good use of 6ths and 3rds.
As @jjw noted, throw in a turnaround, and you’re set.

Cheers, Shane

Loved it Mathieu!. I like how you came back to one melodic idea a few times.

I’m going to slow this down and copy a couple ideas

Well done Mathieu! Very nice tune, recognizable licks. I loved those few chromatic walks you introduced.

Sweet! composing like that is a great way to break out of the ruts we all sometimes get into repeating our favourite licks! Nicely done.

That sounds cool Mathieu :raising_hands: :star_struck:
I have no idea what you mean with the 6ths and the 3rds, but it doesn’t matter much!
Congratulations! Your progress is most inspiring!

Hey Silvia … 3rds & 6ths are simply intervals but grouped together to make melodic lead lines or rhythm parts.

I wrote about 3rds here: 3rds & Thirds - What Are They? Playing & Having Fun

I was sure I had a topic on 6ths too … did I not remember to update it and migrate it from the old forum before it closed and we all moved here? Mmmh. Maybe I need to get looking into that.

Intervals! Right! For some reason I was thinking in terms of degrees of the Major Scale only without referring to the root note…not much clever of me :see_no_evil_monkey::roll_eyes::laughing:

Thanks for the link you shared, I will make proper time to look at it. There’s so much to learn :star_struck::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Wow :star_struck: Thank you everyone ! I honestly didn’t expect such a warm response to my little blues experiment. You’ve all been incredibly supportive.

It really means a lot and gives me even more motivation to keep learning and creating in the community. You guys are the best!

I agree, the turnaround is a great idea. I think my main challenge for the third chorus will be keeping things interesting for the listener — maybe spicing it up with a new idea that changes the pace, style, or rhythm.

A turnaround + a new lick idea and maybe even a slightly faster tempo? I’ll challenge my teacher with that in our next lesson!
