AI - where else in music?

We’ve had plenty of chat about AI use in songs - we are musicians, so that’s hardly surprising. But what if we get away from the song writing itself, where else is it used in music?

My band “In Progress” released our 1st single today. In so far as I’m aware we used AI for 2 aspects.

The mastering was done using an AI tool.

The art work was from a human generated original sketch. We used AI to make it a perfect square rather than a rectangle and to remove some writing (both were required to comply with the rules of streaming platforms). It’s not much of a jump to assume the artwork could be generated by AI.

The songwriting, playing of instruments and singing were all human (the band members). The mixing and use of effects (mainly compression and reverb) in Logic Pro was done by a human (me).

So which other functions or processes, that we as musicians don’t usually get involved in, is AI used for to take a song from the composer’s head to the ears of listeners?

(In case you want to listen to the song you’ll find links to it in this thread "Always Remember" - an original song by Simon Calverley (aka simon_plays_bass) )

I wonder whether this is just a matter of definition?

Since the advent of the quest to build thinking machines back in the 1950s, each of its successes has been countered with a move of the goal posts. SOAR did reliable logic, that wasn’t good enough. AlphaZero beat us at games, we wanted more. ChatGPT aces the Turing test, but we demand creativity. Generative models create music, art, movies, literature, but now we want creative creativity.

On the other hand, the term AI has been co-opted by marketing departments to describe features of everything from shoe liners to vacuum cleaners.

Either we don’t have AI yet, or it is everywhere.

So Simon, I think that is likely to be the theme of any responses you get to this.
