Alberta - Eric Clapton unplugged

That was excellent Gordon. You seemed very relaxed and hitting notes I would never think of attempting. I thought the solo was great.

Hi Pam. Yes the school shooting made international news. Dreadful. Clearly a guitar forum is not the place to discuss this but you guys have to stand up and change a constitution that allows anyone the right to own a firearm. After all, we Brits aren’t a threat anymore.

Oh yeah, I love my fellow Community forum Brits!

Hi Gordon, I liked how you played and sung this song. I think that technological enhancements worked well too. Your transition from the rhythm to the solo and back sounded seamless to me. If you were sweating inside, it was not reflecting outside. Nice garden.

Thanks for the listen Mike. I appreciate the support and the comments.

Excellent as always. Great performance. By the way, his EC talking about a woman or the Province of Alberta?

Thanks for the listen Sandy, I’m glad you enjoyed the song.
As for the meaning of the lyrics, I’ve always assumed it’s about a woman as the references in the song seem to imply that it is.

Alberta, Alberta
Where have you been so long?
Alberta, Alberta
Where have you been so long?
I’ve had no loving
Since you’ve been gone

Alberta, Alberta
Where’d you stay last night?
Alberta, Alberta
Where’d you stay last night?
Come home this morning
Clothes don’t fit you right

Alberta, Alberta
Girl, you’re on my mind
Alberta, Alberta
Girl, you’re on my mind
I’ve had no loving
Such a great long time

Alberta, Alberta
Where have you been so long?
Alberta, Alberta
Where have you been so long?
I’ve had no loving
Since you’ve been gone

Weird name for a woman… and because I live in Canada, I thought immediately of the Province Alberta

Lyrics can be interpreted in different ways. Could it be that someone has left their homeland and on returning, things have changed? Next time I meet up with Eric I’ll ask him.

Was it not originally done by the Mississippi Sheiks? I think they also did it as Corina, Corina

In the 1930s they also recorded it with the lyrics:

Sweet Maggie sweet Maggie
where you bin so long
Tell me sweet Maggie
where you bin so long
There hasn’t bin no lovin since you bin gone

Now that’s the version for The Community, James, honouring our own @batwoman, a way to call for another song from Maggie

Yes, maybe Gordon will cover the sweet maggie version next time he revisits the song.

I wonder if they changed the name based on the partners of the group members or whether one of them was a bit of a womaniser.

Really enjoyed this. I don’t know the song, but it sounded great. Love the rhythm, the vocals and the solo. Lovely stuff.

Yes I think a lot of Blues songs have a long history and are sung by loads of different artists who change the lyrics and put their own spin on things. I enjoyed your links to the other versions.
So far we’ve got Corrine, Corrina, Maggie and Alberta.
Sounds as if she puts it about a bit. A lot like Layla!

Thanks for the listen and comment Claudia, much appreciated. If you don’t know the song then EC’s Unplugged album is worth a listen.

Let’s not forget that other scottish spin on it
