I have been playing guitar for 55 years but have only learned chords and one basic strum. I can play almost any chord, but I want to start learning from the very beginning and finally learn how to play the guitar. Should I use the app or website?

I’ve only used the website, I can’t comment on the app. I’d say start with the beginner course on the website and see how it goes, it’s free and you have nothing to lose.
Hi Ralph,
I never used the app it came later than I started (I’m not an app user anyway) but the website has many advantages ( and you play for a long time so you must know now where to find the songs you play along
) and certainly the text on the website under the lessons is a big plus… There are many little extras to get out of here not covered in the videos. don’t forget to read those pieces of text below…
Welcome here and I wish you a lot off fun ![]()
Greetings Rogier
found some other search queries here … this was for novice players, but I and several others with me still think that the website gives the complete picture … the app has been properly evaluated since the beginning ( it was primarily a handy play-along/kareoke tool …which I have read) and after some conversations with people who have been playing music for decades and wanted to play guitar were not able to participate/get used to the app (about 2+ years ago)
I hope this will give you your direction ![]()
For me it’s the website everytime. I prefer the layout and the screen is larger ![]()
Having used both, I would suggest the website. All of the lesson content from the app… and more… is available on the website, and it’s free. If for some reason you need to practice on the go, the website works just fine on a phone so no need for the app. And if you want to play along with songs while being shown the chords, there are various other apps/websites that offer this either for free or for far cheaper than the JG app.
Put simply, I just don’t think the app gives value for money at it’s current price point. If you can spare the cash and want to support Musopia/Justin then that’s cool. But for those on tighter budgets the money can be better spent elsewhere.
my answer would be to test the app
try learning with the app , try also to learn with the website
compare them and use what’s the best tool for you
we’re all different and our needs are differents too , so make your own evaluation ![]()
Nice to meet you ralph, there is a lot of good advice here cheers HEC
Hi Ralph and welcome for me it’s the web site never tried the app tho suggest you try the web site first and maybe the app later.
Hi Ralph I’ve used both and find the web site suits me much better than the app. There is a huge number of high quality lessons and the majority of the content is free. I have bought some of the products that are for sale (Theory course and Jam tracks) and found them great value for money. I think you can get the app. on a limited time free trial so it might be worth a look, we are all different and it might be to your taste
I’ve tried both and prefer the website because I like to read the text underneath the lessons. But the play along to the track feature in the app is good too.
Money no object - I feel they compliment each other nicely. Granted, there is a lot more integration between the two that I’d like to see, especially with regard to lesson tracking and song availability, but the app has come a long way from the early days! I especially like the “guest band” approach for the songs (and helpful chord reminders) that you don’t get on the website. That said, the Song section of the website gives you instruction from Justin (and Tabs if you subscribe and they are available) that you don’t get on the app, and of course there are a lot more songs on the website that aren’t yet on the app. I actually mirror the app from my iPhone onto my MacBook so I have the best of both worlds when I’m at home. Of the two, the website is the most necessary/helpful, so if you only pick one - that’d be it.

Thank you @JohnW. I like how you are combining the two. I worked out of the app for about a week and enjoyed it very much and now I’ve logged onto the website. But I’m having trouble figuring out which of the courses and lessons I have completed without going into each one of them to see if I’ve completed them.
Is there a place on the website where I can view an overall look at what I’ve completed like there is on the app?
Thank you once again I sure appreciate your help
As you work your way through the courses a green tick will appear on the menu for videos you have watched or lessons you’ve marked as completed.
On the left hand side in the dash board there is a Journey category. This shows In Progress and Completed modules.
The app covers 3 modules in beginner stages and play along songs. The website appears to be more extensive both options have the beginner course. I use the app for the practice module… and i might stum to a few in app songs… i would look at the website first to see if its sufficient for your purposes… as i have found the app to be limited this is only for my personal use ymmv
Website is perfect! I love the design.
