Man Of The World - Peter Green

One of the most hauntingly beautiful and timeless songs ever composed.

Written, played and sung by Peter Green, it was first released as a single in 1969; incidentally 6 days after I was born.

I’ve worked on this for a little while now, on and off, wanting to get it in an arrangement, and to a standard, that does it some justice, to the best of my current ability. I believe a song of this nature deserves such respect.

I’m singing again as well, which I haven’t done really any of this year unfortunately, for logistical reasons.
My vocal/ mic/ vocal effects skills have thus dwindled, so this is a good first step back into it. I certainly needed to refresh some old basic learning that I’d forgotten.

As some may remember, I was ‘kicked’ out of my music room last December into the living room, when my son moved back home after 2 years away, to reclaim his room. I miss that private space alot; but anyway, enough whining..

This performance is based on an arrangement, so brilliantly done, by a very talented musician called Travis Adams, from Troglodyte Music. It elegantly combines the central elements of each guitar part (3 in the original) into one guitar.
As I often do, I’m playing over the original track, with the guitar parts removed.

Mick Fleetwood revealed years later in an interview, that, looking back, he could now see, even at that early stage, how prophetic this song was; and the internal pain that must have enveloped Peter in order inspire its composition. There was a sense of guilt from Mick in that interview, that perhaps he should have noticed Peter’s problems, and perhaps could have helped him. What a heavy load for him to have carried all those years.

And what other sublime music may have been given to the world had Peter Green not been lost in the dark for 30+ years.

Anyway, here it is. A heartfelt homage to a genuine musical guitar god. Some minor ‘red light’ flubs, so hopefully they will continue to lessen. Any comments, feedback, tips etc welcome.

Cheers, Shane

You already got the like for the story…

Nice that you started singing again, you have a nice voice… those few mistakes in playing don’t matter at all to me because there is so much beauty in here to hear and see WOW … really an absolutely great song that gives me a few goosebumps moments

Oh Well touché. Sounded good on my phone (sat on a train). I’ll have a proper listen when I get home. The Stumble next Monsieur?

Yes, The Stumble is coming along nicely.
Have the first 2 choruses down pretty well, at almost 85% tempo. Dont think I can get it faster than that at present. Sound good enough for me at that speed

If you’ve not already, check out Adrian Woodward’s, “The Stumble” breakdown. Brilliant as always from him.

I see you’ve also been into Stormy Monday as well, which Adrian also has a great video on, including the Allman Brothers version.

Cheers, Shane

Such a pretty song, but sad with a sad back story of parts of Peter’s life.

Well done on your singing and playing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and went back and listened twice.

I watched that too and should have taken more notice and not rushed into it the way I did.

Yes I check that guy out regularly too and he is fantastic. He covers a lot of Jazz too. But he does not do the entire The Stumble song. The bit I’ve “stumbled” on is farther on than he demonstrates and your progress to date, i.e. the really fast phrase from bar 40 onwards:

I slow this down in transcribe to try to make sense of it and it’s getting there.

Please keep up the Greeny stuff it’s challenging but so inspiring. You sounded great through proper speakers both guitar and singing. That is really not an easy song to sing and play at the same time.

Super performance Shane …

I’d long forgotten I knew this song; last time I heard it was in the early '70s on Fleetwood Mac’s “first” Great Hits album.

Your vocals blended really well too; sadly I missed the “flubs” , so will have to listen again …

A beautiful song albeit with such sad lyrics. I recall Mick Fleetwood ‘welling up’ with tears recounting the tragic loss of Peter.

You will no doubt have brought this song, from this very talented musician, to the ears of younger first-time listeners .

Well played and thanks for sharing … :sunglasses:

Very Cool post, Shane!

Lovely, laid-back rendition of a relaxing song!! You nailed the vibe & overall feel… I think your bends were very good & enjoyed your singing also! Good tone from your setup, you are channeling Mr. Green beautifully!
Congrats on a well-done AVOYP, Shane!

This was your big mistake… BIG… You raise ‘em, love em’, teach em’ - but once they’re out… they’re OUT!!!
My wife & I never “pushed” any of our three kids out, it was entirely their decision. We did make it clear however that once they moved, their former rooms were going to be re-purposed & so no longer available for them to attempt to reclaim!!! :smirk:

Keep on with your music… you are really coming so far in your guitar :guitar: journey!

That was a treat to my ears, Shane!

What a beautiful song (with such a sad story behind). You caught the mood of it so well and sung and played with a lot of feeling, you really captured the essence of this piece. Guitar tone was also perfectly chosen. Lots to like and well beyond my playgrade to offer any substantial feedback.

A most enjoyable listen - good to hear you sing again by the way! - thanks for sharing!
