Thanks a lot, Silvia. I’m really happy, that you like my little song. I’m still at the beginning of finger picking, but I really love its sound and the feeling that it is able to transport .
That’s the wonderful thing about the course and community, being exposed to music genres that you wouldn’t generally listen to. Going in with a positive attitude and trying other genre and songs you don’t know is a great outlook as you can learn so much from playing them and may even enjoy playing a few of them.
That was beautiful Nicole. You have a lovely sweet sounding singing voice! I have a lot of trouble fingerpicking and singing at the same time but you nailed it. I think fingerstyle really suits your voice. Great job and I hope to hear more songs from you in the future!
Ok, here’s my video. I’m a month or two away from finishing Module 2. Some new songs came out on the Justinguitar app. I thought what would it be like to record myself playing a song i have never attempted. Well, now i know.
Certainly there are some fumbles, but I could definitely get it down with more practice. Have a few laughs on me.
Thank you for your kind words and advice. I was just playing this morning and and noticed the slow 3rd finger on D (well I was looking for it after you said). True enough, something to work on. Also trying to strum more from the wrist to make it a bit more fluid. Not sure when I’ll next post something as very little time right now - life/work, etc. Really appreciate the feedback, thank you.
Not bad for a first play through! Shows what can be done with the Justin Guitar app and a familiar song
@jkahn, are you really Ryan Reynolds in disguise?
I thought all things considered it didn’t turn out too bad. It didnt help that my phone which had the app fell back and i couldnt see it straight on anymore. I’ve been at this for almost 2 years from scratch and I think it showed I’ve improved. The strum pattern wasn’t basic, and I was able to play a lot without looking at my hands. I’m pretty pleased.
Thanks for commenting.
@Socio
Yes, definitely. Since I’ve started my guitar journey I’ve come across so many fantastic songs, which I haven’t known before. And not all of them belong to my favourite music styles. JG enriches my journey in so many wonderful ways .
@Eddie_09
Thank you so much for your feedback . I really do like fingerstyle and will certainly focus a bit more on this technique in the future. Although, strumming is also a lot of fun .
That is true Nicole! Strumming is fun and why not have twice the fun!
lol, I think I have an extra 20kg and too much premature greying to be close to that!
Unless you’re talking about my charm and wit of course .
Well done Scott, I think you handled that challenge pretty well. You kept the strumming going, played through the odd hiccup which is so important, and looked like you were having fun. All good. Keep on keeping on.
For a first time run through that was really good, Scott.
Were you pleased with it?
I mean obviously it wasn’t perfect, but for a first time through without any previous practice, yeah! Playing a song for the first time, i didnt know the order of chords, when they change, etc., so I had to look at screen and not hands so much. I think that was a positive. When i did fumble, kept going. That was good too. Started playing with no experience about 20 months ago. I’d say that’s pretty good progress to even think I’d be able to play a song the first time through.
Thanks for positive vibes.
Well done Scott, I think this is a great skill to work on.
Thanks for the kind words Richard! I just returned from a two week, guitar-less, motorcycle trip yesterday, so I’ll be working on getting back into the groove while getting that 3rd finger in line!
This is my first attempt at posting a video of me playing a Grade1 song. This is a recording of That’s All Right Mama:
I am not a complete beginner playing guitar, but I am a complete beginner at making a video of myself playing guitar and posting online. I decided not to wait until I could be polished before posting online, so I made this video this morning 1 hour after I woke up and got dressed and practiced about 30 minutes. I don’t even know if I am posting correctly on this beginners site.
I just received a cheap plastic tripod and light ring ordered online and learned how to use this morning. I can already see that I need to record with my phone in the horizontal, instead of vertical orientation and I need to set the angle better and move the phone microphone closer. I also need to decide on which rhythms to use and reduce the hesitation in changing rhythms. I also repeated the first verse, since I need to work on synchronizing the lyrics with the chords for the other verses. Other comments or suggestions are welcome and I can post again when I have improved. Thanks.
Thanks for the share Steve, good on you for taking the plunge. Some pretty good skills already there.
Congrats on making and sharing a first recording, Steve. Lots to like in the playing and singing. And you have a lots of ideas on things to work on. Look forward to the share.
Good stuff Steve. You certainly have what it takes. It’s not easy to sing and play at the same time and it will only get easier the more you do it.
Here is my last attempt at this song in the Beginner’s safe space. I think that my video is least viewable. I focused on a single rhythm and decided to replicate the rhythm on the original recording, that you can find in YouTube. I didn’t focus as much on my singing, since I really had to focus on the rhythm:
I found the first few measures of the acoustic guitar rhythm tabbed in the Feb. 2008 issue of Guitar Techniques. Most of the article focused on the electric guitar playing of Scotty Moore, rockabilly pioneer. I found another tab of the intro in Acoustic Guitar June 2014. But I also verified by listening to the original recording (not the 1968 Elvis comeback tour video of this song found in YouTube). This will be the last video I put in the Beginner’s safe space. I was happy to be able to put up my first attempts and work out some of the issues. I am starting module 14 in Grade 2, so I am looking forward to recording songs that are more interesting, although you’ll have to admit that this rhythm is a little harder than your average beginner rhythm
I discovered that iPhone video is 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 4:3, so that it is more cinematic and makes the video seem wider that most of the other videos in the JG community. I wonder how others create videos with your iphone or do most people use tablets, laptops, GoPro, etc.?
Thanks for the feedback
