Behind the Scenes - Helen's Log

@Stuartw Thanks Stuart, I didn’t think you were talking about external stuff .

thats the exact same issue I had with plonk plonk
because of that i had 2 strings buzzing

My squier was cheap so it was not a big loss but yours is expensive, so use the warranty !
you should have a 2 years or 3 years warranty so you re still in time

At least if it was Thomann, they often deal with different manufacturers and problems and know very well if they could do something for you.

Yes, it is from Thomann’s, so probably worth the effort.

I did some searching concerning the hum/vibration of the g-string at the weekend. Did I mention it is an acoustic guitar?
I put all strings off again and checked all parts and all bracings, but everything is well fixed. I’ve put some “underlayer” (spare parts, came with the guitar) under the pickup under the bridge and the vibrations were gone, guitar sounded just as sweet as I’m used to. Unfortunately after 2 days, it came back
I also checked the neck again with a long ruler and it occures, that it isn’t even, maybe slightly tilted or warped.
I hope I can get in contact with someone who can check that professionally and then I’ll make a decision what to do.
It’s annoying… :squinting_face_with_tongue:.

It’s interesting that you got rid of the problem for a short time.
So the tech guy probably checked for loose tuners, loose screws or a bridge slightly lifting on the back side ( I once had that on an acoustic guitar, but didn’t notice any sounds) or cracks in the wood. And you checked for loose braces.
Do you - while pushing in the bridge pin to fasten the strings - pull at the string so the ball ends are really really close to the bridge pin?
Erm… what else could be loose? vibrating loose truss rod? I don’t think it’s very likely, maybe not impossible. Strange …

I hope you can play anyway at the moment and have some fun with a different guitar!

you should really contact thomann to send the guitar back

@domi7 It’s pretty weird that the problem was gone for some hours. Good tip to check tuners, I did that yesterday, but they are well fixed.
Controlling the ball ends was my first thing to do (did it twice) when the vibrations occured first, everything as it should be.

I can play, but I have no fun (I’m a bit sensible to those bad sounding things), it drives me crazy, as not only the g string is vibrating, but also the bass strings. Really bad for practicing the Boom Bass or Steady Thumb piece, as the whole guitar is giving me bad vibrations. Sigh… I have to see what a professional can do for me!
But thanks for your nice replies!

@GrumpyMac I think, I will have it checked again, I couldn’t prove anyway, that it was already delivered with a flaw… I’ll see how it goes!

I’m pretty excited, I’m going to see Joe Bonamassa tomorrow night in Munich :star_struck:. I bought those tickets 9 months ago and finally the day will come tomorrow! I hope it will be a great show. I’ve never seen him live so far…

He’s terrific live. I saw him in Glasgow a few years ago. Keep a count of how many different classic/vintage guitars he uses during the show.

@roger_holland I almost forgot - since I’m following Justin’s new premium course “Transcribing in real-time” I should do so !
When I can’t keep up, I still could use it for an autograph !
@sairfingers That’s good to read! I guess he carries a full container with his collected guitars with him - I’ll keep my eyes open!

April 2025 and first week of May

I don’t know where time has gone in April. This month just “disappeared” somehow. I practiced regularly although my sessions were shortened due to other commitments.

I’ve been working mainly on early Grade 4 stuff:

Barre Chords:
Thankfully there is progress, worked a lot on hand position and chord perfect excercises, switching between different chords up and down the neck, switching between barres and open chords. I’m currently working on speed also, playing lots of songs that include as much as different changes as possible.
Thankfully my hand and wrist are getting more used to the stressing, so I can play through a full song now. It’s still going slowly, but steadily.

Major Scale Meastro / Improvising:
Still running my scales up and down, building up speed and accuracy. Had some more tries on improvising and on the One Finger Solos. Still not satisfied with those early attempts on improvising.

Finger Strumming Course:
I didn’t move on, still practicing the Muted Hit Finger Version (gave me lots of extra work due to my guitar vibration issues and the hits made it even worse) but I’ve found a fun song to play with this technique, so happily practicing this not so easy to sound good technique.

Studies and Song work:
I hit a plateau with my “Boom Bass with Licks” so I’ll reduce my practice time a little on this for the moment and will move on to the “Steady Thumb Primer”.
“Yesterday” is still on my list, still working to get it smoother (B7 barre, I hate you, but be assured, in the end I will be the winner!)
The rest of my time is spent on keeping my fingerstyle patterns fluent and on a few songs that cover certain techniques I want to improve

Guitar maintainance:
My acoustic kept me busy with the vibration issues, this took a lot of time and cut a big hole into my practice time, including several string changes and researches.
I’ve finally found a young female luthier (by accident) to have a deeper look on my guitar. She will do a whole setup and including fretboard and frets. The good news is, that my guitar doesn’t have a serious damage as far as she could say at first sight. She told me, this guitar, although being a “mass-product” (seen from a luthier perspective) is very well crafted and a good instrument, so worth the effort to do some revision. I’m so happy and hopefully I get it back in a few days in good condition.

My absulute highlight in April : Joe Bonamassa live in Munich
What can I say? It was a powerful, breathtaking, overwhelming example of pure demonstration of excellence!
I’ve seen plenty of videos from him and his band but to see him live was a real fantastic experience.
We had one of those magic early summer days / evenings in Munich together with good friends at the old Olympic site (big park), which is now used for lots of sports and cultural events. Very special flair there and also a great venue for concerts.
For sure, remembering this evening will give me so much joy for the next months!

Try to impro with only 4 notes at the beginning
focus only on the technics , put everything you know

it really helps !

do you want the link explaining the exercise ?

That’s what I’m doing, Rebecca. I concentrate on only 2 strings at a time or a couple of notes and try to get melodic. I also went down mainly to one chord vamps. It does work and sometimes it sounds quite melodic, but still feels random. I know, it will come with time and more practice, but still I could use some more input or guidance, at least, that’s what I feel.
Oh yes, would be happy about your link, can only help along the road!

wrong name

ill send you the link in DM ^^
