dyslexic and learning guitar slowly.

Hi, I’m dyslexic and learning guitar slowly.

Just wanted to ask how other dyslexic players learn best.

Videos or tabs?

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

Hmm, tricky one to answer, my wife is dyslexic and has no interest in playing any instrument so I cannot ask her, however my nephew is quite dyslexic and he did start to play when he was younger, in his mid teens. From what I remember he had an aptitude to see patterns on the neck and remember them, so learning chords shapes and scale using diagrams might work. He also has a natural ear to pick up pitch and rhythms so often he would listen to a favourite song, fumble around on the guitar and then learn it by ear.

I think he may be a little autistic as well and I believe sometimes people with autism can have more natural ability with music and learning instruments as their brains work in a different way to most of us.

Perhaps @Richard_close2u or @Dave_Birnie could advise as they are JG teachers and might have a better insight?

Hi Andrew ,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Very slowly, just like the rest of us …

It will sometimes be quite a challenge, but the advantage is that although there is some very nice additional information in the texts below the video, the video lessons are so good that listening will get you very far … and if you prefer reading out loud texts by phonme or computer there are all kinds of resources for that nowadays.

And very good news …the advantage of learning music is… musical training/learning supports the treatment of dyslexia. These training effects are accessible and can help in many ways in your head…they already occur during extensive musical activity. More intensive musical training has even broader effects, including improved concentration and increased integration of parts of the brain.

I hope this helps and is good news for you :crossed_fingers:

Greetings ,Rogier
