Erika's learning log

I introduced myself about a year ago, but have been mostly lurking and reading the forum ever since, so decided that it might be about time to start my own learning log in order to feel a little more connected to the community and hopefully feel more confident to share my playing and progress.

I’ll start with a brief re-introduction: I’m Erika, I live in Southern California, and I picked up a new guitar as a 40th birthday present for myself last year (pictured below). I’ve always had an interest in learning, and even dabbled in trying to learn in my mid-20s (on the early days of JustinGuitar), but I could never find the motivation to stick with it. Then I turned 40 and decided to give it another go. I guess I had a moment of realization that I didn’t want never learning to play to be one of those things I regret when I get older.

I do have a musical background: I played flute and then saxophone from the age of 13 through my early twenties. I played in a jazz band in high school and even started with a music major in college, but it was too much classical music and I eventually transferred to the film program, which is the industry I work in now.

Fast forward to last year, when I bought my guitar and signed up for JustinGuitar. I moved pretty quickly through the first beginner lessons, and was surprised at how much of the beginner chords I remembered from my earlier attempts to learn to play. But after a few months, I started to hit a wall again. I saw a few folks on here talking about taking private lessons in conjunction with JG, so I decided to give that a try. I found a teacher in my area and started taking private lessons in July. That has been a huge help, and finally gotten me past my blocks.

I kind of realized that I was holding myself back from moving into Grade 2 because I was worried I hadn’t learned everything well enough, but I was also getting bored with the songs I felt I could play with only the knowledge I’d gained in Grade 1. My teacher had me learning bar chords pretty quickly, so I realized I could probably move ahead in JG to Grade 2 as well. Plus, I started going through some of the music theory lessons. My teacher has also been helping me to learn to play songs by ear which has been very fun and probably the most motivating of all.

About a month ago, I started increasing my daily practice time to closer to an hour a day, because I was finding that 20 minutes of time wasn’t really enough to feel like I was progressing week to week in my private lessons. Sometimes I split it up into a few 20 minute chunks, though. Here’s my current practice routine:

-spider walk & other finger exercises
-scales (C major and G major)
-chord perfect and 1-minute chord changes (this changes depending on what songs I’m currently working on or what I feel needs the most work)
-strumming practice
-songs & improv practice

The songs I’m working on at the moment:

Bob Dylan “Rolling Stone”
Beatles “Here Comes the Sun”
Beatles “Daytripper”
Dusty Springfield “Son of a Preacher Man”

I guess that about wraps it up for now. I’m hoping to update this learning log monthly with my progress. I’d like to record myself playing and share it, but I’m not feeling that any of my songs are quite at the point where I feel comfortable sharing them. I’m thinking about getting an input device if I can find a good price on Black Friday, though, so maybe I will get up the courage to share something in December. Oh, and here is the promised photo of my guitar.

Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the world of Learning Logs, Erika. Hopefully your LL will become a great place, where you will feel comfortable to share your successes and struggles with learning guitar :slightly_smiling_face:

How do you like combining 1:1 lessons with Justin Guitar?

Very good looking guitar btw :guitar:

Hi Erika,

Welcome to JG. There are lots of lovely helpful folk on JG who have started, stopped, stopped learning guitar many times for different reasons, including me, and can offer advice and support through your journey.

My advice is set a daily practice routine and keep a diary of progress, update it and amend the routine as you go, Video yourself playing asap, so you can review how it sounds and your technique, 1minute clips is enough. When you feel brace post videos on JG for others to see, you will get helpful feedback and pointers on technique, believe me this is invaluable.

Have fun on your guitar journey.

Welcome, Erika!
Nice to read the start of your log!

Like you, lots of us got stuck at some point when they had the feeling they shouldn’t continue with the course, but repeat and practice stuff before moving on, but from my experience and - if I remember the consesus well enough - most will tell you here to move on when you’re bored and most importantly continue to have fun. You can still go back a bit later if you think that there’s something left for you to learn or practice.

And - while I also enjoyed grade one, I think the even more fun stuff comes in grades two and three!

So you have a nice musical background and will certainly have an easier time with theory and musicianship in general!

And it’s great to hear your in-person lessons help you, it’s not always easy to find the right teacher for you.

In case you need help with input devices, you can also ask here. A few of us are a bit tech-nerdy, uhm… or maybe it’s just me and the others are rather “interested and experienced”

Hi Erika. That is a very nice intro. You seem motivated and well organized. Your start at a learning log shows just how much serious work is involved on the journey to becoming a guitar player. Just remember it’s also lots of fun, especially meeting some of the characters on this forum. If you haven’t yet, check out some of the upcoming and archived Club sessions!

My advice would be to forget that sentence !
you ll NEVER be perfect and waiting to be at a good level to share will just put pressure on your shoulders
One way to relieve the pressure is to post work in progress videos in your log this way , later , you ‘ ll be able to see the progress you made

nice guitar !

Hi Erika,

Good to hear from you. It a challenge this learning isn’t it, but worth it.

I picked up learning properly again after a 20 year break so I identify with what you say.

Your guitar looks great! Is that one of the Squire Classic Vibe range? I have a Squire 50s Vibe and I love it.

Keep at it! I feel like its a never ending journey of learning, but in a good, creative way!

Hi Erika, that was really interesting to read about your musical background! I think updating your LL monthly to be a very good idea, I do it myself and really helps me to stay on track and set short-term goals. Don’t put pressure on your self for sharing your recordings, but keep in mind that there’s a Beginner’s Safe Space section here in the Community and that whatever you post you’ll receive kind feedback and some advice too from the more expert among us…this is really a happy place to develop confidence.
You can also post short clips of you practicing songs here in your Log to explain people what you’re working on, achieving or struggling with…it definetely feels less demanding than playing and recording a whole song!
Uh…I was forgetting your Blue Guitar is really beautiful!

Hi Erika, thanks for sharing your journey with us! Interesting to read that a private teacher helped you to get over your blockage. Seems related to the question that comes up regularly: when am I ready to move to the next grade? That is just so hard to gauge when you have no comparison. Your teacher seems to help you learn how to help yourself, and that’s the most valuable thing you can gain from the lessons! So good luck to you, waiting for the December update now!

Thanks so much! I’m hoping so too, or at least that it will help to keep me motivated. I find the lessons combined with Justin Guitar has been a huge help! Mainly I was having a hard time feeling like I was ready to move forward in the lessons and so it’s been useful to have someone who can give me immediate feedback if I’m playing something correctly or not.

@AJSki2fly Thanks so much! I do keep up a daily routine in a notebook which has been helpful. I actually recorded myself playing earlier today and it was definitely a bit eye-opening! But it was useful for me to listen to myself and I do think I might be brave enough to post a recording in my next log.

@domi7 I got really lucky finding a good teacher in my area, which was also part of the reason I decided to give lessons a go. I’m WFH right now, so my work schedule is a little flexible, but I don’t know that it will always be that way, so just trying maximize my learning while I can and I’m still pretty beginner. And I will definitely ask about input devices! I’ve been looking at the M-Audio Duo as it appears to be a pretty simple beginner one, but maybe I’ll make a separate post about that on the appropriate forum.

@mfeeney0110 Thanks so much! I’ve been wanting to try out a Club session, hopefully soon!

@GrumpyMac Ah, you’re right, I should just go for it. I always get so nervous sharing anything online, I am definitely not gen-Z, haha. I’ll try to record and post something for my next log update! Thanks for the encouragement! Your log is one of the ones I’ve been following and encouraged me to start my own.

@Ontime Thanks! One of my favorite kinds of cookies!

@Gothomson It’s an Affinity Series. Honestly, I picked it because I found it on a bunch of lists recommended for beginners. My guitar teacher seemed fairly impressed with it, though, so maybe that’s a good sign? I don’t know a ton about all the different guitars yet but I’m learning and figured I’ll try to get the playing under my fingers before I start collecting too many fun guitars. I do think I want an acoustic before too long, though, too.

@Silvia80 Thanks so much for all this excellent advice! I will definitely check out the Beginner’s Safe Space to share some recordings. I do want to share, it’s just always intimidating getting past that first hurdle of sharing something online. But it’s been helpful in my lessons to have someone listen to me play and give me feedback, so it would be awesome to get some advice from all the lovely folks here, too. I’m going to really try and build up the courage for my next update.

@MollyT Yes it was definitely a huge help! I think I was lacking confidence and it’s been helpful to have a teacher who is encouraging me to keep making progress.

ah ah thank you

I should definitely follow my own advice more

@iwinatcookie ? I accept the challenge  if it means eating cookies.

Keeping a learning log is a great decision. It’s an extra commitment, but it also provides additional motivation. You get to share the story of your own guitar journey, which then becomes reality—isn’t that great? So please stick with it—you have a loyal reader in me.

You have a similar musical background to my daughter. She also started playing flute as a small child and now as teenie plays the saxophone and piano. She is now entering a difficult phase in her life and I can see that she draws strength from music. I am always happy when music is part of a young person’s life.

Don’t worry, you won’t win a Grammy here. You are here in your own LL and the recordings are only for your learning process, so no one but yourself will judge you

Cheers Withold

Hello again Erica!!!

Nice to see you back in the Community!

I remember the first time my wife recorded me playing… I didn’t know she was doing it & so I didn’t have a case of “red light fright”… it was very helpful to see both what was working & also what wasn’t! It helped me to make a breakthrough with a couple of “road blocks” I’d been struggling with! So, kudos to you for taking that important step!

Congrats on your L/L start… I’m looking forward to seeing you play that beautiful blue strat!
Good luck!!!

Well, I said I would try to update this log monthly, but it’s been over two months now since my first update. I did share an AVOYP in the Christmas songs thread, though, so maybe that counts, too?

I’ve recently been working my way through Grade 2, Module 8 in addition to my private lessons. I think I’m starting to get the hang of the stuck 3&4 chords. I have been learning to play “Brown Eyed Girl” as well as practicing the “Wish You Were Here” riff. I recently recorded my progress on those, so I thought I’d share them here.

In my private lessons, I’ve been working on more Beatles, this time “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” as well as the E pentatonic scale and working on some soloing from there. My teacher taught me some blues licks that I’m still trying to get under my fingers, but it’s been fun to have a little free time at the end of my practice sessions for trying to solo over a backing track.

That’s about all for now. Thanks for reading & listening!

Thanks so much for your kind words! It was a fun thread to post my first AVOYP and helped me get over that hurdle of being afraid to share.
