“playing within the context of the chords” has more meaning than trying to copy the exact notes on a tab sheet.

Also, don’t underestimate using your ears. A critical ear can judge how crucial or optional notes are in the passage. I often get to passing notes by tying and listening before even to getting to the theory (especially in my beginner bass days)
