Finger picking

Add specified finger picking songs, country, folk, etc. to the app.

Oh, yes! That would be a great development of the Songs App. It would also help to add picking patterns to songs and the possibility to filter so that it is easier to find them…

Isn’t the app primarily aimed at beginners though? Fingerpicking and other techniques are more of an intermediate thing. At least in my opinion.

Hello Nancy,

yesterday I created suggestion on Justins Feedback page. You can put here your own too.

Maybe you can give it a vote or leave a comment about your request.
But for now it looks like it is under status about inspecting, so it is not visible.

Justin is the best when it comes to teaching but I’m not a strummer, so I’ve had to bounce around finding picking styles. I went on eBay & bought "Hansen’s Popular Finger-Picking, Guitar Method. It is old, but really gets u started. I like to follow Justin because he always adds so much more & it’s for the common man. U don’t have to be an intermediate to begin finger picking.

I agree on suggestions for the finger picking style to use. I go on UTube & watch & listen to find the finger picking style, or close enough! As with strumming, it’s very helpful to get into rhythm playing along with the original songs. Just mute the guitar & go for it. It gets the old adrenaline rolling! Try the Finger-Picking book I mentioned that I got on eBay, nothing like it out there. It’s a GREAT starter!

Finger picking isn’t harder than strumming if it’s presented in the right way. My strumming sucks & I can only finger pick! Strumming isn’t for the songs I play.

Yesssss, Please!!!

For your information, it was the most requested feature on the app about 4 years ago with 99 votes on the Musopia website .

It says ā€œPlannedā€ on the Musopia website, but don’t get your hopes too high. No update on it since 4 years.

There is a module here Folk Fingerstyle | JustinGuitar.com

The original post was in regards to the app which I’m not familiar with but here is the website lessons on the topic.

And that will take off your picking. Just like barre chords, the beginnings are slow and tedious but you start to do variations of your own real soon as soon as you get the hang of it.

Not trying to copy everything exactly as it is will breahe some air in your playing and leave room for discovery as well.

@pyradise I agree jumping to fingerstyle is better when you have some knowledge… I did it hard way. I started to mix fingerstyle even in Grade 1, because I just love this kind of style… after that I abandoned Grade 2 Justins system and went for fingerstyle by Paul Davids and some small takes by others. Now I have some foundations and I do paralel one day fingerstyle and one day pick strumming following Justins Grade 2 again… and everything I learned in fingerstyle, harder way… now also apply to Grade 2 and things are much easier for me.

You’re reading my mind Lieven, I think it’s a lot about developing the feeling of it, as well as the basic technique. To what you wrote I would add only that some basics of Theory on how chords are constructed will take one’s fingerstyle to the next level: you chose just the notes you need to simplify the tricky passages and the fretting hand work load becomes lighter…as a consequence your playing becomes smoothier.

There are things that one just discovers along the way, when the fundamentals are really strong.

Nancy…this is exactly me at the beginning! I was hopeless with strumming and now I can strum a little bit…decently too! Go for fingerstyle if that is what makes you feel more confident! But always working on the fundamentals. Have you considered Justin’s Strumming SOS Course? I highly reccomend it! What I think is it’s way harder to make strumming sound and feel half as much sweet as fingerstyle, at least for me, it will take me a lot of time…fingers strumming, and with some individual note through it!

exactly!
That’s fits in the ā€˜layered’ approachwhere you can keep on adding complexity that scales up with your abilities, instead of bogging you down with hard parts beyond your current skill level.

ā€œplaying within the context of the chordsā€ has more meaning than trying to copy the exact notes on a tab sheet.

Also, don’t underestimate using your ears. A critical ear can judge how crucial or optional notes are in the passage. I often get to passing notes by tying and listening before even to getting to the theory (especially in my beginner bass days)

I am all about fingerstyle (with classical approach I suppose).

However, I am really glad I spent a good couple of years with strumming and Justin’s basic courses plus the app.

Of course I still need work on those things, but I can’t imagine having skipped over basic rhythm , cords and strumming. It helps with the adjustment to the instrument, music and rhythm. Feel, as it were. I need it for fingerstyle, I need it to mix fingerstyle with strumming and it helped me actually have fun much sooner.

Matter of opinion, though I didn’t claim strumming was easier for everyone. I said the app is primarily aimed at beginners, and strumming tends to be what beginners are taught first and focus on, with finger picking coming later.

Definitely believe ur 100% right. I’ve been going thru all of Justin’s lessons faithfully. I needed to relearn all the chords from 60 years ago & his app is a godsend. I’m 82, & only learned finger picking all those many years ago & it must be stuck in my muscle memory. What I really meant was that u can learn some picking styles after knowing the chords & getting ur feet wet, & do both while learning all the other good stuff. I like to sing along & I can’t keep a strumming rhythm going at the same time! The fact that I’m singing along is rather a scary thought isn’t it?

I can’t find ur suggestion. I’d definitely give it a big thumbs up.

I have only skipped over the strumming things that I’ll never use while finger picking. Other than that, Justin’s my guy. I’m 82, so I’m moving right along & my finger picking is pretty good. My biggest problem is I keep finding ANOTHER neat tip or skill or style & changing up what I’ve been using on my songs. There’s a lot more to learning all this when I played 60 years ago!
