Greetings from Nicole in Finland

Hi,

I’m Nicole and I am located in Porvoo, Finland’s beautiful, second oldest city.

My guitar skills are very, very rusty and I have always been at a very average beginner level at best. While I do hope to start practicing more with help of JustinGuitar’s App and website, I would also like to introduce myself to this great community. So, here is a little bit about me:

Music has always been an important part of my life. Listening to the radio as a child and teenager, picking up that one music magazine with that facinating cover shot of David Bowie in the late Nineties, thus finally starting to broaden my music horizon as a young adult. Enjoying unforgettable moments at concerts I visited. Now, one of my best moments on an average day is discovering that one piece of music, that I didn’t know yet, but want to listen to over and over again, because there is so much to discover.

Back then, as a teenager, I would have loved to be able to play guitar. But that would have meant attending a course, making mistakes and risking having people laugh at me. There was no way I would have been up for that. A few years later, I got a cheap concert guitar and got to a very, very average beginner level, learning on my own with help of guitar books. Good enough a level, that I could sing and play at the same time. Good enough that I had fun.

Living in apartments for most of my life meant that my old guitar stood in some corner unused (…“can’t risk to disturb the neighbours”…). The same happened to a beginner’s accoustic Yamaha and an actually nice sounding semi-accoustic Epiphone.

Within a span of 20 years, I did attend two guitar courses, but always quid, since I was not making the progress I envisioned and since practicing was difficult (“… cannot disturb the neighbours”).

Yesterday, I got my Gretsch G2420. While I’m still waiting for my practice amp, I do love how this thing of beauty sounds unplugged already.

This time, I will stay at it. Thanks to the practice amp, the “… cannot disturb the neighbours”- excuse will not be viable anymore. I will practice chords and chord changes with more discipline than before.

I have always dreamed of playing guitar alongside a river, at a lake or on the beach. This summer, on some sunny day, I will do just that. I will pack my Gretsch and practice amp, be at a beautiful place at a lake or at the sea and play.

Have a fantastic Sunday everyone!

Thank you Lee,

“My songs”… Oh how much fun it would be to be able to write my own songs. Not there yet and probably won’t ever be. But then again, never say never

Nope. Never played a Gretsch. Just love how they look. Think the Gretches are the coolest looking electrical guitars…

Hi Nicole,

Welcome here, and you know third times a charm! I am pretty sure you will find the support and resources here to pull you through.

Sitting outside at a river or a lake, playing, sounds great, very nice vibes.

During corona times, we could not play in our practice room, so we would meet outside a small lake in the evening and Jam together (acoustically). It was always very fine, until the mosquito’s came…

Have a wonderful sunday too

Hi,

That sounds so nice :slightly_smiling_face: And true, I actually forgot about the mosquitoes, which do tend to be a bit bigger issue here in Finland than in Germany …

Then again, I intend to play that badly that I will hopefully scare away even the most aggressive mosquito (unless mosquitoes are deaf…)

Hi Nicole, welcome to the community.
Gretch makes such a beautiful guitar and they are just lovely to play. I’ve had mine for 4 or 5 months now and I love it!

Hi Nicole and very welcome. Didn’t know what a Gretsch was, so had to look it up. Something new learned :+1: :sunglasses:

That’s my dream guitar, the hollow body one, mostly because of the look. I could easy have one just hanging as decoration, the Mahogany or Walnut colour
Live in apartment and also have to think of the neighbours, though headphones could do, nothing is like full power on the speakers :joy:

I wish you a wonderful guitar journey and that you will get to play that Gretsch as much as possible. :+1: :sunglasses:

Hey Nicole, welcome to the community. Great to hear your story.

Another guitar option to consider when worried about disturbing neighbours is the Yamaha Silent guitar. My wife wakes up much later than I do and the silent guitar allows me to play in the room beside the bedroom without disturbing her at all.

Welcome Nicole. I looked up Gretsch, too. I’d love a hollow body or a semi hollow someday. I have a Squire Strat, first I’d like a nice acoustic. So many potential guitars, so little time!

Hi Nicole, welcome. Good you’ve found a way to practice without disturbing the neighbours. That project of playing guitar at the waterside sounds pretty interesting.
