This was a challenging fingerstyle song to play and sing but I finally got it to a point where it’s shareable.
That was nice, you have such a lovely singing voice. And very nice flow on your picking. I have the same issue with getting my phone mic to pick up vocals when I play my electric and try and sing pver the top. Haha that bridge, good recovery. Thamks for sharing.
Thank you! I even tried a different audio setup today with a Scarlett and a mic. I’lll find that sweet spot with my audio one day!
Well done Sonyal, I am sure you are new here and you are straight in at the deep end well done, I would love to hear your voice balanced, the Scarlet will help you achieve that, Cheers HEC UK
Thank you. I’ll watch some videos about how to use the Scarlett optimally. Figuring out that stuff is time consuming but probably worth it.
If you need any help with Scarlett or anything else just shout out you will be answered here cheers
Sonyal
A very good performance. Your guitar playing was very tidy and you kept really good time despite some difficult changes. You have a wonderful voice so it will be well worth experimenting with the balance on your recordings. Very enjoyable.
Brian
Thanks Brian, will do.
Nice performance, Sonyal! You’re doing great! It would be nice to hear your voice a bit louder, but I know the balance between the music and vocals has already been mentioned, so I won’t repeat it. Looking forward for your new videos
Thanks. I watched your Bob Dylan performance on YouTube and you definitely have the audio balance between your voice and the guitar optimal. Curious about your setup if you could break that down for me:)
Some nice guitar play and a sweet vocal too Sonyal. Well done, very enjoyable.
I know you’re working on your audio balance. I’m listening on earbuds and the vocal is in my right ear and the guitar in my left. I think a balance across the middle with the vocal volume increased would improve things.
Thank you. I educated myself a bit more about how to control volume between the guitar and mic with my Scarlett. Should be better next time:)
Hey Sonya–
Like others–I send kudos on playing, and a beautiful voice while playing.
Does the software you’re using to record the song give you the option of adjusting channel levels on playback? Perhaps that could be a more flexible path than getting it “just right” with the input levels on the Scarlett solo? I’m a beginner on the Scarlett Solo/recording too, recording into GarageBand and I have that mixing option in that software. I think I remember it in the freeware Audacity.
Another thing you might experiment with is the placement/orientation of the microphone. Additionally, some mics have options for how the “pickup” inside the mic is configured, for example “omnidirectional, uni-directional, bi-directional” — those choices of setting and placement might help isolate the guitar sounds from your voice. Some microphones are very choosy about the orientation of the sound waves they pick up, and some figure every sound wave deserves full respect.
Again–congrats on all the work you’ve put in to get where you are–very enjoyable to listen to.
Thank you so much for this info. I have a few DAWs downloaded on my computer (Audacity is one) but I have’nt taken the time to learn how to use any of them yet. I’ve been so focused on my playing. I’ve just been recording on my phone sadly. I’ve got a lot to learn in the AV/recording space and I will explore these tips you’ve given me.
Yes, sure. I have a Scarlett Solo 3 Generation audio interface (bought it secondhand for 95$) and Rode NT1A microphone (bought it also secondhand for 160$). And since I like voice to be louder than music on a recording, I make gain on a microphone higher and a volume on my amplifier lower
Thsnjs for sharing!
They are daunting, those DAWs. If you’re a GarageBand user, I’d be glad to share a screen with you about how I, as a nube, uses it. I’ve got my guitar on line 1, and a mic on line 2 of Scarlett–haven’t yet ventured into syncing that with video…
I appreciate the offer but I just realized today that my Scarlett came with Ableton Live 12 and I’ve heard thats pretty good so I’m going to learn that one. It is definitely the most complicated looking DAW I’ve seen thus far but I’ll take the time to try and figure it out. I already played around with the mic placement and turning the mic up and guitar down too and found that to be a big help. Thanks again.
Enjoyed that Sonyal, have vague recollections of this from back in the day. Vocals were really neat and so good you can sing comfortably and play at this early stage in your journey.
Changes were pretty clean and the rhythm was pretty tight, all good. Is the guitar un-amped ? I am sure this may have come up before but this old boy can keep track of all the posts these days. But another good recording and thanks for sharing.
