DyeV got together today to play a couple very un-holiday like songs and we thought we would share them with you all. We wore Christmas outfits and there was a tree, so thatâs got to count for something, right?
First up is DyeVâs latest original- Doormat. Lyrics below for those interested. After Doormat is our cover of Bikini Killâs Rebel Girl. Our bass player Yohanna took over vocal duties for this one and did a phenomenal job! My daughter Arelly who plays keyboard for us was feeling a bit camera shy when we recorded, so she was on video duty cheering us on from behind the camera.
Thanks for sharing in a little holiday spirit with us
Doormat lyrics
(Verse 1)
You couldâve had it
But you didnât
The light was shining
You were in it
You held your virtue
but you lost it
Itâs unbelievable
The price is high
So you wonât pay it
My hopes were high
But you stayed silent
Principled but
Still complicit
(Pre chorus)
You listen to people who say but donât do
Whatever happened to facts and the truth
Theyâve got your number
(Chorus)
You let them walk all over you
You let them walk all over you
The sign says welcome
But I see a lie
Got one eye closed
You spit in my eye
You let them walk all over
All over you
All over you
(Verse 2)
Talk a good game but
Youâve been played
Resolveâs been drained
I know youâre afraid
You had your chance
And yet you stayed
Itâs unbelievable
Lies flow like lava
You feel the heat
Wouldâve been wiser
To claim defeat
You chose the crazy
Now I feel weak
(Pre chorus)
You listen to people who say but donât do
Whatever happened to facts and the truth
Theyâve got your number
(Chorus)
You let them walk all over you
You let them walk all over you
The sign says welcome
But I see a lie
Got one eye closed
You spit in my eye
You let them walk all over
All over you
All over you
(Bridge)
Theyâve got your number
Theyâve got your number
Theyâve got your number
Theyâll wipe the floor with
(Chorus)
You let them walk all over you
You let them walk all over you
The sign says welcome
But I see a lie
Got one eye closed
You spit in my eye
You let them walk all over
All over you
All over you
All over you
All over you
Mine has just started and this is a good way to get into the spirit.
Love your punk/rock vibe (appeals more to me as one not really into metal). So much attitude.
Just a thought, I felt Yohannaâs vocal âcut through the mixâ (to borrow the cliche) better than yours did. I canât talk technical about soprano, tenor etc. But maybe her higher pitch in comparison helps. Maybe you just need to be mixed up a little louder, perhaps a high shelf on your voice?
Hereâs sounded a little thin, would love a bit more body in that. As an idea you could try just doubling the track, adding a slight time offset, perhaps a fraction of panning separation?
Anyhow, I am being picky, this music is all about energy, attitude, and great riffing which you deliver in spades.
Everybody is going to say âyouâre greatâ or âwow, fantasticâ or ârock ânâ rollâ or more complimentary stuff.
So Iâm going to be different and simply ask why Dan was wearing tinted swimming goggles?? haha
Thank you David! Glad we could help get you into the festive spirit!
I agree. That was the one thing I was kind of bummed about with the sound, but overall, I loved it so I figured weâd share anyway I have a deeper voice than Yohanna does and tend to use my lower register a lot, so the mic probably should have been turned up more when I was on it. Plus, I move a lot more Yohannaâs voice is much higher pitched than mine so it definitely âcut throughâ better. We did a test before we recorded and Dan liked where my vocals sat, so we went with it hindsight is always 20/20
Glad you enjoy our punk vibe and thanks for checking it out!
Thanks Deborah! I thought about posting it there, but I didnât want to hijack your festive thread with two non-holiday songs Maybe if you and the mods think it would be better to go there it can be moved?
Excellent!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Since heâs in the back, itâs a bit hard to tell what he is wearing I thought people would ask what he had around his neck. He is actually wearing a small glittery tree skirt around his neck with a Santa hat and some elf ears, which were hidden by the headphones unfortunately. His âgogglesâ were a kind of John Lennon style round red sunglasses I told him he kind of looked like a Christmas dinosaur. He loves wearing weird stuff, so he was having a lot of fun with it
Festive greetings to you as well!
Thanks Ian! Hopefully soon! We are working on getting a full set together to be able to do that . We are planning on applying to be in a local festival here over the Summer and we need an hour and a half set for that, so we are getting all our material together right now.
oh no no !
it was meant to be a community post where everyone gather to post christmas songs
like a family photo album full of souvenirs together ( that we can bring back later to remember how we were )
Always good to see someone presenting an alternative festive frolic, the costumes fooled no one ! What a couple of crackers (festive pun tee hee) but I can see Doormat being hijacked by CP at some point as the stylistic undertone is already there and would only take a little tweaking.
Being a person of little age, the Bikini job was new on me and some good old fashion new punk, which means it probably came out about 3 decades ago. What can I say about the vocal, the offspring of Lemmy and Avril with a huge dose of attitude has arrived. Well done Yohanna great job.
Season greetings to you all. Looking forward from more of the Dye diversity in '25.
Thanks Toby! I donât think Iâve ever learned an actual holiday song, so this is the closest youâll get from us
Definitely! I could see it too! Just need to throw Jeff in there Heâs pretty much already the 6th member of DyeV
Agreed! I think she had a lot of fun singing this one. We all had a great time watching her punk alter ego take the mic on this one! Greg was super proud of her
Thanks Toby! There will be more coming from us
Thanks Boris! So happy to hear! I always wondered what my âstyleâ would be when I started writing music and itâs cool for me to get to see what itâs turning out to be. Happy holidays!
Just to be clear, the comment was more about applying a little bit extra polish to make it shine a little brighter. Nothing âwrongâ with the production.
Not sure how you produce, if recorded directly via a mixer into the video with limited post-processing perhaps not a lot you can do but balance levels.
I think your performances are so good that if you donât record the audio as individual tracks in a DAW to mix the audio after maybe it is worth that extra effort. I think just a little EQ work would be worthwhile. That high shelf on your vocal, maybe a little boost in an upper mid. Also high pass filters to cut the ultra low end from voice and guitars would help.
But I also appreciate the ease of a sound setup and then just record and release.
Once again, must say I really enjoyed it and honestly think what you have all accomplished in what is IMHO a short time is fabulous
Yep, when we play with DyeV, this is our current set up, so we are really just trying to balance the levels.
We would like to eventually get Greg and Yohannaâs audio into Reaper (which we use to record for CounterPlot) So that we can get really good takes of all the audio and be able to do a proper mix. We were a bit limited for time this go around- but we are working on it!
Thank you so much David! Iâm happy you enjoyed it and I think the whole band is very happy with how far weâve come in only a year. Pretty mind blowing!
