Hi All
I’m a late starter to guitar as the title says. Slipping slowly to my mid 50s now.
I was gifted a guitar several years ago and it has sat, silently in the corner, in one of the bedrooms. There ways a promise initially to learn to play that was apparently no more than a spoken wish, as I did not do anything about learning.
I came across it again recently and picked it up, plucked some strings and thought “what now”. So here I am. I have no visions of rocking with the guitar but want to be able to pick it up and disappear into practice and learning to play songs. Looking forwards to being here with other beginners.
Hey, welcome Spencer. You’ve landed at the best place to learn that guitar and interact with supportive teachers and students. You will soon find out that “slipping slowly into my mid 50’s” makes you one of the youngsters around here.
Welcome Spencer, it’s never too late but remember that slipping can lead to injuries that take longer to heal; as one clocks-up the years.
… 55 was so last decade.
You’ve made a good decision to make this your place to learn, and although it can be a bit overwhelming with what seems like a behemoth of a website at times, there’s a comprehensive learning plan mapped out for you. All you need to do is put in the practice … .
Take your time, and pace yourself to enjoy the journey …
Hello Spencer & welcome!!!
Follow Justin & you’ll be able to play that guitar with basic chords & easy songs in a short time!
A couple of pieces of advice:
Keep the guitar somewhere easy to access, a stand or wall hanger & pick it up whenever you have 5-10 spare minutes. It makes a huge difference in how quickly you’ll progress!
Take your guitar to a music shop for a “setup”. They’ll change the strings, adjust the action (the height of the strings from the fretboard) & generally make your instrument more “playable”! This makes it easier to learn! While you’re there, pick up an inexpensive electronic tuner like a Snark or equivalent - they make it so simple to keep the guitar in tune!
Good luck with your journey! It is going to be fun!!! (After the finger soreness goes away!!!)
Tod
P.S. Check out Justin’s left handed learning Nitsuj - makes you feel better knowing that the teacher struggles just like you are!!!

Hey spencer, welcome to the forum. I started in my mid 50s and now about a dozen years later I’m so glad I did. The rewards are amazing and you only have to be a bit determined esp during the first few months when your fingers all feel like thumbs. Hang in there, it definitely gets better and it doesn’t take that long. Look forward to hearing more from you.
Welcome Spencer! You’ve found a very good place to learn. Lots of students here who picked up guitar later in their live’s. Community members are very supportive and help you out, whenever you need it. Hope you have lots of fun!
Hi there, i’m 57 and only started in Jan this year and the worst of all is that i have no talent for music. But must say i 'm really enjoying Justin’s lessons. Where he says that it is a weekly lesson - i give myself a month to get that lesson under the belt.
