Hello from Tatiana in Merseyside, UK

Hello everyone. My name is Tatiana and I am from Merseyside, UK (if you are in the UK as well, I hope you are enjoying the sun! :slightly_smiling_face:).

I discovered Justin’s website about 12 to 15 years ago. At the time I had the intention to restart trying to play the guitar but I wasn’t really making time for it. I say ‘restart trying’ because by then I had done about eight months of private guitar lessons but hadn’t really got anywhere. Last October or so, I decided to get serious about it. I started watching Justin’s lessons and then I discovered the app. I have found the app to be extremely helpful, particularly because I don’t have much time. I feel that I have made huge progress in very little time (my partner, who can hear all my playing, also agrees). This is because when I was doing lessons, I used to stop at every mistake, and with the app, I just have to let it go when I am playing and then practice transitions I am having difficulty with afterwards. I am now interacting a bit more with the website (I got the music theory course, and I am really enjoying it as it is all making more sense), but still, I spend most of my time following the course on the app and then going on the website if I feel I am missing something.

I am looking forward to connecting with other players.

Hey Star Dust! Thought I’d seen you in the galaxy somewhere before.

Welcome to the community. Learning to never stop when you make a mistake and just keep in the song and recover your playing is a critical and great skill to have. If you are ever playing with others (duo, trio, band), stopping on a mistake just is not an option.

I started playing at a very busy time in my life and what made a difference for me was always finding 15 minutes every day. I made it part of my lifestyle, just like having a hot drink when I first get up in the morning.

Look forward to hearing more from you

Hi Tatiana
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Merseyside  I’ve heard something about that… some special characters come from there… and something about a republic founded within the great kingdom… aha ,that place where strange characters come from… beware of the wandering slightly confused figure with guitars walking through the streets there late in the evenings listening to the name @brianlarsen … Do not look it straight in the eye and turn around and walk away calmly when you see it, although it has many appearances so it is not always possible to observe it in time :scream::laughing:

Greetings,Rogier

Lots of kind and friendly folks who will be honest and offer good advice and constructive help. Tons of fun ideas and lots of diffferent instructors and clubs for supplemental learning. Good luck and keep up the hard work. You can do it.

Thank you, Tony!

I like the idea of making it as essential. Maybe this is because a coffee first thing in the morning is non-negotiable for me.

Thanks, Roger!

Yes, a unique place, indeed. And with some of the biggest-hearted people I’ve met!

I will watch out for @brianlarsen  It is great to know that there are other people in this community who are nearby.

Hi Tatiana, welcome to JG. Apps are great to get going, but IMO it is best not to get too reliant on them, as you can end up able to play with the app but not without.

Star Dust is great, we’re all sat on a spec of dust flying around a star thats flying around the centre of the Milky Way at some astronomic speed, and so on, ooh thats a bit deep!

Enjoy your journey with your guitar through space and time. :sign_of_the_horns::guitar::grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Hi Tatiana, welcome. Good you have restarted trying with playing guitar. As far as you take advantage of both the app and the website I think you’re in a good path.

Hi Tatiana, welcome to the community. Your user name reminds me of David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust. Is that the inspiration for the name?

I have good memories of Merseyside, Liverpool in particular. I lived there on and off between the ages of 5 and 24. I’m in the middle of watching this video on YouTube,

which is reminding me so much of people, places, songs and the particular zeitgeist, both musical and general, of the time. The bridewell that is mentioned in the video is a disused police station that became a rehearsal studio. I was involved in preparing it for that - including digging out decades-worth of rubbish, literally 4 to 5 feet deep, that had accumulated in the basement. The deal was that if I worked for nothing, my band could rehearse for nothing. Then the band split up!

Here’s that url again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwehX28YMcs

A warm welcome to our Community Tatiana! I get what you mean when you describe your progress through the App as I experienced the same a few years ago when I discovered the App for the first time.

Please don’t take our dear Rogier and Brian too seriously…they love joking and tease eachother and make all of us :joy::joy::joy: @roger_holland @brianlarsen

Hi. Thank you! Yes, doing both, particularly on weekends when I have more time.

Thank you, Silvia! Yes, the app has been great to get me into playing again. The first thought I had was, “I wish I had discovered this earlier.” And the website and music theory course have been great too, of course.

Hi Mark. Thank you for this I just watched a bit of the video and Ian Mcnabb talks about seeing Marc Bolan at the age of 11 on Top of the Pops and… what was that? It put a smile on my face. Very interesting. Thank you!

Top of the Pops was a BBC TV program that ran on Thursday evening and featured acts with singles in the top 30. Everyone watched it, and it was pretty much the only way you got to see bands before you were old enough to attend gigs. I also remember seeing Marc Bolan on Top of the Pops as a young teenager, and thinking I wanted to be in his band, playing a white Strat (I didn’t actually know the name of the guitar, but I knew the shape I wanted).

Today Top of the Pops exists only as a radio program on the BBC World Service. I sometimes listen to it at night, here in Sydney.

I think my message was a bit convoluted. the ‘what was that?’ that I wrote was what Ian Mcnabb said when he saw Marc Bolan on TOTP. I felt the same when I saw David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust for the first time.
