Hi everyone,
I started my musical journey when I was ~6 years old and joined the church choir. I’ve been singing in choral groups practically my whole life. I started playing acoustic guitar when I was 10 and learned to play basic chords, and basic strumming and picking patterns, but I became too nervous and panicked when playing in front of anyone. I’ve tried to pick the guitar up again over the years, but I never had music goals and couldn’t get over the anxiety, so it didn’t last.
Fast forward to now, my son started doing open mics a few years ago, and I became introduced to our wonderful, supportive local music community. I’m motivated and encouraged to perform in some local open mics and instead of relying on someone else to provide the music, I’m back to learning guitar with a goal to perform in an open mic!
I found Justin Guitar just about a week ago and I’m starting from the beginning and enjoying the lessons. I’m learning to strum with a pick, but prefer to strum with my fingers and learned a lot from the lesson on different ways to strum.
I look forward to sharing my progress and watching others progress well.
With Justin Guitar you’ve found the perfect place to restart your guitar journey. The course is great, and this community is very supportive. So if you need any help, post it in the forum .
This community also runs virtual open mics. Maybe that’s also interesting to you.
I wish you lots of fun with your six-string-friend and look forward to hearing more from you .
Great stuff. Having a supportive community makes a big difference. I was lucky when I first started playing guitar to be told of a nearby acoustic music club. everyone there is SO encouraging. i remember when i led my first song at a jam. Was super nervous. Got about 3 bars into the 1st verse and stuffed it up. Had to start over. Got about 4 bars into the 1st verse and stuffed it up again. Had to start over AGAIN! All I got from everyone there was smiles and encouragement.
open mics are a lot of fun and the source of heaps of nerves. good luck!
Hello Carolyn, a very warm welcome to the community. Kudos to you for following your dream and being prepared to go back to the start and try learning from scratch. If you already have years of singing experience then I hope that soon you will be able to start singing to your own simple accompaniment, even just some very easy strumming sounds good if you carry a good tune over the top. I’m working with a few students just now who have open mics and singing to their own playing within their goals. I’m sure you will get there. If you need any help, support, encouragement etc. then just ask.
Cheers
