Im a 40 something complete beginner from the north of England. I have had an obsession with the guitar ever since I saw Guns and Roses on the tv back in the 80s and I am still to this day a huge fan of their music.
I never learned growing up because my parents thought it was a waste of time and I needed to focus on a “propper education” and to quote my dad, not on that head mashing rammel.
( I still dont know what that means)
Then adult life got in the way, uni, work, kids and the dream faded away.
Last year for my birthday my husband surprised me with an electric guitar. I then started the hunt for lessons and came accross Justins app. What a fantastic creation, incorporating knowlege with structure makes it so easy to understand. I love the karaoke style play along it really helps with getting timing and rhythm in to your playing much faster than playing alone, I have found.
I have been learning for a little over a year now and currently studying module 17, I am obsessed with my guitar and most days while kids are at school I can be sat there for multiple hours trying to get good. My motto is if you dont love being bad how can you expect to get good. (I think my neighbour strongly disagrees)
I have been following the community silently but have mustered up the currage to join in, maybe in another year I might get the confidence to post my playing rather than sitting back and admiring how well everybody is doing.
Have a fantastic day everyone I look forward to chatting with you all.
welcome
…only has one ‘p’ in the middle.
This is your Dad speaking!
Welcome out of the shadows, Nikki, and congratulations on your ‘obsession’.
You’ll get out what you put in. Don’t leave it too long to share. No one judges here, and you’ll get lots of boosting of your confidence
Hi Nikki ,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun
I think I like your man… great gift
Feel free to watch my very first video in the dark of mine then you don’t have to wonder whether you should be better before you post something, I hope … at least record something and keep it for yourself … the sooner you post (or keep it private) something, the faster you will see an improvement and that gives a nice boost…
Greetings,Rogier
Thank you,
I keep doing that, I need to get a keyboard, I keep my fingers on the letters too long and send all kinds of made up words to ppl:joy:
Thank you, I have a few that I have I have done already with every intention of adding to the forum and I just talk myself out of it. I will put one up soon.
Welcome Nikki
Posting your first video is a BIG step! I found it very daunting, but once you do it the support you’ll find here makes it worthwhile.
So, basically, go for it
Mick
That’s a great introduction Nikki. We can all relate to sitting for multiple hours “trying to get good.” As for your father’s phrase “head mashing rammel,” an A/I query says rammel is an old English word meaning something like “Underbrush, trash, hard barren soil, discarded or waste matter, and fallen branches or what was left over when tanners and charcoal burners had used what they wanted.” Guns N Roses fans will disagree with your father and say Rock On!
Welcome to the forum Nikki
Welcome to the community, Nikki!
HAve loads of fun on your guitar journey!
Welcome Nikki! Your husband sounds like a keeper! Looking forward to hearing about your continuing journey.
Welcome Nikki!
It sounds like you’ve got a great attitude towards learning. One of the things I enjoy with guitar and music in general is that there is always room to learn and grow more. It sounds like you embrace a similar mindset. I look forward to seeing you post a recording sometime.
Having just recently come out from lurking myself, I can say that everyone here seems very friendly and welcoming. I haven’t posted any of my own recordings yet, but it’s been more due to not having had the time to do so. Unlike some communities I’ve lurked in, I feel much more comfortable about the prospect of sharing something here.
Welcome Nikki, I did it, and I’m generally very shy. We’d love to hear you.
Hello Nikki & Welcome!!!

Welcome onboard, it’s always nice to have new folks introduce themselves, it’s a good place to have fun while you’re learning and getting encouraged by us reprobates
Looking forward to hearing more from you!
Hi Nikki, welcome to the community forum. I think that your motto repeats Justin’s constant advice. Have fun at every level and you will make progress. So, have fun learning songs.
