Hi Steve welcome aboard I’m 48 and started here and honestly it’s an amazing way to learn. I started at grade 1 Video 1 and slowly worked my way through. Believe me I’m no expert but I’m amazed at how much I learnt just from 20mins to half an hour at the end of each day. Don’t rush and don’t stop. It’s fun and there’s always people here to help. Enjoy and good luck
Cheers Dean… Had the little acoustic since November just gone, and have decided to make a concerted effort to make a go of getting a tune out it…thanks for your encouragement!
Kind regards

Hi Steve, I also took up Guitar in my 60’s and am in South Wales (Cardiff).
All the best with it. My advice would be dont be a perfectionist. I remember being very frustrated that the fingers on my fretting hand would touch other strings and it really bothered me. I would say fixing that is for later.
I have realised that the only way I’m going to make a leap in my progression is to find a jamming session willing to accept beginners (with some very patient tollerant people). I’ve failed so far but if you hear of anything in South Wales, do let me know.
Graham
Hi Graham
Thanks for the advice …you’re lucky you could even feel the other strings, Graham. Tips of fingers on fretting hand is like the skin on a rhino…have gone through the painful stage, and progressed to the stage of what seems like permanent indentations (somehow the strings seem to gravitate towards these indentations
)
Will certainly keep my ear to the ground and let you know about any jammers
Keep rockin’

Hi Graham.
I am also in Cardiff and not been brave enough to go to any jamming sessions yet.
Aware of a few open mic nights in various pubs but am not at that level yet. Can let you know where etc if of interest - need to ask a few proper guitar playing mates!
Cheers

Welcome to the community Steve!
Many thanks!

Thanks Huw but I am so far from being good enough to do that!
Hello Steve & Welcome!!!
At 60, you’re still at a good place to start with guitar… it’s truly an epic Journey to go from zero to proficiency & possibly Mastery of this incredibly fun instrument!
Early on, you’re challenged to make sounds that even approach “music”, but if you stick with Justin’s method & follow the Modules with lots of consistent practice, you will improve & be a guitarist (by the way, you’re actually a guitarist now!!!)
If you haven’t already, get a stand or wall hanger so your guitar is always handy. That way, when you only have a few minutes, like when your coffee
is brewing, you can play for a little bit! Those 5-10 minutes here & there really add up!!!
Also, make sure to keep things FUN!!! If you’re having a blast, you’ll never stop!!!
Good luck!
Tod from New Mexico USA
Hi Todd
Many thanks for your welcome and encouraging words. I seem to be getting along kind of ok. I do approx 90mins daily practice at the moment. Some have advised this is too much practice in one sitting? BUT, I enjoy it, even though my tips of fingers seems to have morphed into skin like a rhino
…
Strumming I find the most difficult exercise to accomplish. To get the patterns flowing and consistent sound and tone, particularly on the up-strum. I do believe my persistence will pay dividends though. I’m of a frame of mind of ‘I won’t let it beat me’ and I’ll get this guitar to play a (discernible) tune one day…
Thanks again

Willy the Wombat here. My name is Steve and I do live in Wales, a mile or so from Ystradgynlais. Cardiff City supporter or was back in the day so know Cardiff very well, lived in Fairwater back in the 1980’s! I’ll be starting relearning very shortly, haven’t played since 1993 ish. Dug out an Epiphone SG, tomorrow I’ll try to find an accoustic, Applause I think, a cheaper version of Ovation, one Glen Camboll played. I’ll start with that.
Try playing the earliest version of Breaking the Law, can more or les play it on a few strings and hmm away at same time ![]()
Hi Steve and croeso!
First time I have ever encountered a Bluebird on any guitar site!
I am a season ticket holder and living in Cardiff.
When not stressing about football, I am also trying to learn the guitar after a gap of too many years.
This is a great site and community so good luck with it all.

Huw
Hi Huw
Wrong ‘Steve’ by the looks of it??..My user name = Steve_in_Wales… the other one (who your very recent message was for)…his username = Steve in South Wales …
I find this chat forum soooo confusing! ![]()
Cheers
Steve
My user name is Willy_the_Wombat, very long story but I am Steve and do live in Wales. Huw, I had a season ticket for many years, even when I was based in Copenhagen and lived/worked in many country’s. Steve_in_Wales, Huw, if you’ve followed Wales away on coaches (busses) then you’ll have probably met me. But anyway, it’s about guitar journey, mine starts in next week or two. I don’t know how many guitars I have, 12 maybe, plus the ones I haven’t built. Don’t have a bass though, gave the last one away, may buy a cheap one to play “Guns of Brixton”, great bass line. But… I think I may start with “Summer of 69” on accoustic, Missy likes that tune, oh and who let the dogs out ![]()
Oops - sorry Steve. You are correct and my apologies.
Too many Welshmen on this confusing site😊
Good luck with the journey Steve - enjoy😊
It’s either that Huw, or, there’s just too many confused Welshmen! ![]()
Hi Steve, welcome. Good you’ve started with your guitar learning. Don’t worry too much about the pace but the enjoyment. You got a good number of replies because you threw a question and the community tried to answer it. Everyone with his or her point of view. That’s we are good at, trying to help other students. The community website has sections and each section has threads like this one. Your welcome thread at some point will get quiet. You can start a new thread at any time in the section you best think it fits (a moderator may later move it) or participate in any existing thread. Keep having fun with the guitar.
