I’ve been learning for 6 months now and I love it. I had one-to-one lessons for about 4 months and also attended a teacher-led jamming group. I’ve written three songs, and lyrics for a fourth. I try to practise every day and manage probably 5 days a week, but once I start I tend to practise at least an hour. It was a huge turning point for me once I could play songs, because instead of practise seeming like work it seemed entirely like pleasure.
I like rock music, but the songs I’ve written so far feel more folky. I do like folk-rock.
This site was recommended by a friend, P, and I’m excited to get involved ![]()

Hello Deb & Welcome!!!
Seeing that you’re friends with Paul, I won’t try to advise you except to say that I feel that the most important part of the “Journey” is to keep the FUN at the forefront… if it’s lots of fun whenever you can spend time with your guitar, it’ll be a lifelong pleasure!!!
That & don’t fret over practice time… many days I only get a few minutes between other things but do pick it up every day, even if it’s only 5 minutes!!!
Good luck!!!

Paul (from France)
Hi Paul! Thank you so much for recommending it. It seems a lovely place with lots to do and lots of opportunities to chat about guitar-y things ![]()
I remember wondering why people had so many guitars, but now I fancy getting an electroacoustic for open mics ![]()
Thank you, Tod. I am indeed lucky to know Paul, who has always been very generous with his advice ![]()
Thank you to everyone for the nice welcome ![]()
It certainly is!
This is the downside ![]()
Welcome to the community. Yeah, for me it’s all been about songs songs and songs.
Hello Deb.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard
