Hotel California solo progress tracking

Week 20, 33hrs of practice.

It is part one and two together at 90% speed. I feel I am slowly getting there, but still many things to correct.

The thing I thought would be very difficult is actually quite doable. I think the key here is the index finger, which is placed between E and B and separates strings while they are bent, but also ensures E is muted after it is played. After that, it is just a simple roll of ring finger from E to pre-bent B sting.

This fast vibrato below is impossible for now. It sounds awful when I try. I played a clean bend here, but Iā€™m practicing this part separately to get it right.

Any comments are appreciated.

Thank you John, I appreciate it.

Getting there, Boris! I think if I were trying to master this, Iā€™d loop smaller portions of the backing track and work on smaller sections at a time.

BTW, there are fantastic tutorials for HCā€™s intro and solo by Andy here: Lesson Index - Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials

That is where I learned the acoustic intro. Havenā€™t tried the solo. Keep at it! Iā€™ll be interested to monitor your progress.

Kevin, thank you so much for listening and for your kind words!

That is exactly what I do! I post here finished/improved (hopefully) longer parts, but I do practice smaller sections by setting backing track section loop in Transcribe software. I always have few tricky sections to practice so I can switch between them when lots of repetitions become too much.

Thank you! I learned simplified intro as well some time ago, but didnā€™t practice it for months now. I checked your link, that sounds like a proper HC intro. I will give it a try for sure!

Make sure you give Andyā€™s solo a listen as well. He has some very good tips on how to nail those tricky parts! (What am I saying, itā€™s all tricky!)

Week 28, 45 hours of practice.

The remaining part of solo, played finally at full speed.
I find the flick off triplet section at the end the most difficult here. I practiced this a lot, but there are always few that slip off the beat.

I am very excited now to put it all together at full speed. I can play most parts at full speed, but some work is still required on tricky sections.

Thank you John! BLIM helped a lot as well, I think it was the good decision when to start. :grinning:

Working on dreamers develops the skills all around, right? Congratulations and hats off to staying with it for so long, sounding really good now! Just a wee bit more practise and the last few niggles will smooth out as well.

It does indeed! It also provides a lot of motivation when you manage to overcome difficult parts.

Thank you so much Molly.

This is awesome man well done! Love to see what real progress over time looks like and what discipline can do! Kudos :beers:

Thank you Neil!

Sounding great!

How are you getting away with posting this on YouTube? Iā€™ve had 2 friends who posted themselves playing Hotel California and both had their YouTube account deleted for copyright infringement. One of them had 5 years worth of videos (several hundred). All gone.

Iā€™ve been afraid to post any videos of me playing Eagles tunes.

Thank you Craig!

I uploaded the videos like any other, I didnā€™t get any YT restrictions. I also didnā€™t receive any request to take them down, but happy to do so if there is one. I have no monetization on my channel, I am learning to play guitar.

If the copyright thing would be an issue for us when we post videos of our covers it would be an issue for most of our videos, not just Eagles songs.

Because of this, I had assumed the important factor is whether the person posting the video is making money from their channel, ie making money from reproducing someone elseā€™s copyrighted song.

Don Henley is an edge case as he is very aggressive about covers posted on YouTube.

Eagles Have 60 People Policing The Internet For Unlawful Use Of Their Music

That is part of the reason Justin and a lot of other online instructors donā€™t give lessons on Eagle songs or heavily modify them if they do.

Neither of my friends were making money off their account. So Iā€™ve been erring on the side of caution and not posting Eagles songs.

Wow. Iā€™m crossing Boys of Summer off my list of prospective videos of me playing then. :smiling_face_with_tear:
( not Eagles, I know, but Don Henley )
