Great lesson, beautiful song and some good new chord variations for me. Gotta love Tom Waits

I really liked this lesson, and the song as well. The lyrics are masterful in telling its tale of unexpressed romantic intentions and imaginings as well as loneliness. Its kind of a lullaby for lovers. When compared to other material provided at this level, the basic fingerpicking pattern is doable, but the refinements and the turnaround part are definately challenging, with the rhythm changing. The singing part will bring its own challenges to get the phrasing right, and especially to keep the fingerstyle going whilst singing. Once I am halfway comfortable, I will turn this in a AVOYP and share.

Hi there,

I am getting back to learning Tom Waits song, “I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love With You” and remembered that I was struggling with learning the nice pretty flourishy parts between the verses (after you pluck the F, G, and C chords) In the video, Justin seems to prefer to leave this stuff in the hands of the student, in order to advance their learning and experience and I appreciate that, but I am maybe still inexperienced (I like to punch over my head) and have struggled to get a good sound on this part. He gives an example, but it is a bit quick for me to learn.

Does anyone have any suggestions for that little twiddle part that happens between the verses? I am doing so well with the rest of it, but those flourishy parts are so important to the song that I feel far from mastering it.

As always, thank you all for your help!

Hi Richard, the idea is that you also ask song-specific questions under those song lessons, which saves people from clicking who can or want to help look it up and it keeps things a little neater here and so keep the questions and especially answers and solutions together :sunglasses:… good luck and have fun learning the song :sunglasses:

Edit: Now you’ve put me on a new project again… you mean what happens at 8:05 where he puts his little finger down on the G on the D string and hammers his middle finger on the open G string?

if so and you still can’t figure it out…turn the playback speed down if my information doesn’t help you yet…nice song

Hey @Rqualls ,

Here is the bit that he plays, starting from that final C chord (of the F, G, C sequence):

Thank you Roger. I sadly realized that part after I posted in haste. I will be more careful moving forward. Cheers!

Thank you. I believe there may be a bass walkup after, but this really helps me out. I am not great at seeing people play and figuring out what they are playing, and pretty slow, so thank you for your patience. Hopefully, that will come with experience. I have sort of staggered through it and am getting something that sounds pretty good now. Thank you again!

Hi @Rqualls Richard
Thanks to you I’ve been working on this great song 4 times a day for 2 days now, it’s great…

And I would like to add that people who want to practice the thumb over the neck technique have a go here and Justin also points out a great practice around 12:00 time …

And the whole song is great for not to difficult fingerstyle practice when you do it slow and without singing :sunglasses:

And at 10:48 a wonderfully beautiful harmonious chord progression … and very easy to expand by yourself  :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Greetings,Rogier

Am I being a good influence, or a bad one? I am addicted to the older Tom Waits songs right now. 90% of my playing time is this, and Heart of Saturday Night as they are both at just a little above my skill level so are challenging me. I think that I figured something out based on the previous tabs given. I will post a video when I get a little better.

I hope that Justin does a lesson for Time by Tom Waits. Doesn’t seem too hard but the only lesson I could find did not rise to the level of Justin’s teaching. That might be my favorite song of his, amongst many of his masterpeices. He has a knack for making anything seem beautiful and magical.

Have a great weekend and thanks for your input!

Cheers!!
