My old Topic included AI so I wanted to keep these completely separate.
My first is one I’ve been working on for over a month, there’s been a lot of new ideas to explore with it. It’s my first time trying to improvise in Phrygian, and to add to it I decided to have a go at Moorish Phrygian, which is a 9 note system.
It’s been great fun and a lot to get my head around but I’m quite pleased with my first attempt. It’s called Eclipsed:
What a great track to wake up to in the morning, Darrell
I is well-impressed!
If/when I ever get to the ‘modes’ thing, this will be on my ‘to do’ list!
I can literally see the Dark Side of the Moon!
Thanks Brian, it was fun! I had a bit of inspiration from old school Emmerson Lake and Palmer in it plus a guy on The Warning’s Discord who is an amazing musician Xavier Xerxes, he’s the one that introduced me to the quirky mode, I never knew it existed but it sort of adds an extra dimension to it, maybe a bit of weirdness
Big fan of that genre
Wow Darrell,
That is amazing … I would give a big beer or 4 to see you play something like that on video … several people have already explained to me that it is complicated because of the video technology (or something) that this involves…but if you ever …
Greetings
Hi Darrel,
I think it’s a cool and interesting melody and instrumental. But I’m confused to what exactly I’m hearing here?
On the one hand you label it as “my first improvisation using Phrygian” and “improvising on bass and guitar”… but on the other hand I hear some super tight bass (and guitar) playing, harmonized sections, a great mix. Chord stabs.
It confuses me? What part is you, and which part is a backing track or (dare I say it) still AI generated?
Please take no offense, but I cannot believe you played or mixed all of those parts. If you did, then you’re indeed a world class bass player!
Kasper
It was very difficult, there’s 2 Bass tracks, I had thought about copying the one and doubling it but it didn’t sound like I wanted it to, the two tracks had slightly different Fx, one more Fuzz than the other.
There was 5 in total guitar tracks, I split them into parts the biggest one being the distorted main melody part, the next the clean part and the others the chord stabs and the other two were added last where I thought it needed fills.
The Drums were sequenced to go with the Bass parts and added last before the Bass came in.
I did have some help with this from a friend from The Warning Discord community, Xavier Xerxes he has his own YouTube channel and is a great musician. It was him who encouraged me to try the Moorish Phrygian idea, I have to admit it was a bit overwhelming initially but it started to vibe with me and I just gave in and gave it a go. Xavier did have a look at the mix and did make a few adjustments, but he said that for a first attempt it was pretty decent.
Well done Darrell!
Very impressive, I really enjoyed that. You had a nice groove going on there. I especially like the second half through the ending.
I have not really gotten my head around modes yet, but hopefully I’ll get to the point in my theory journey where I can mess around with them
Great job!
Thank Jenn, yes it’s worth looking into modes in some cases using them makes a subtle difference but with Phyrigian it makes a lot of a difference particularly if you use the Moorish version (which is 9 notes instead of 7); I found out about it through Xavier Xerxes, he’s very much a contemporary composer and musician and just happens to be on The Warning’s Discord.
Great job. Tight on the rhythm and mix. Very cool
