Not the first cover of this song here in the community but I think I am the first to play Eva Cassidy’s fingerpicking I’ve kept Gordon’s melody - it’s more familiar to me, and also easier to sing than Eva’s version.
There is actually a bit of a story here, because I did not even know Eva’s version until a couple of months ago. I started learning this song last year as part of my project to get better at singing over 16th note strumming and that was not easy, took me about 3 months to get it anywhere half-decent. All the time youtube was suggesting that I should also listen to Eva’s version but I resisted until I gave in and that was the end of the 16th-note strumming of this song I think deep down I must have always thought that this song suits me better if fingerpicked but I had not thought about the how at all. Eva’s version is full of interesting things (sus chords, pattern changes, melody lines, bass lines etc) so was a real fun challange to learn.
Thank you so much Tomasz @Coda , Brian @beejay56 and Carl @Carloski for listening and leaving a comment. It makes me so happy that you liked my performance!
What a triumph @MollyT Molly. I’m filled with admiration as I hear how beautifully you’ve integrated singing, the heart of the song, 16th notes that you’ve nailed, fingerstyle and the spirit of Eva. You make it sound and look effortless. Congratulations.
Beautifully done, Molly! I love Gordon Lightfoot; and Eva too! As Craig @CD02 says, I also wish I could Fingerstyle like that. So happy for you that you are so good at it.
Thank you so much Richard @Richard_close2u . Happy to have given you a song idea One of the great things about the community here to swap music ideas! I have lost count of how many songs I have learned after someone posted a cover or otherwise referenced an interesting song. Which version are going for - strummed or fingerpicked? Just curious.
Thank you so much Maggie @batwoman and Paul @mathsjunky ! I am rediscovering Eva’s recordings at the moment - I always knew her as a great singer but she was never on the forefront of mind as a guitar player as well, and I have to say some of her fingerstyle arrangements are just really beautiful, nothing overly fancy or difficult, just really very, well, Eva Have already started learning the next one, fingers crossed I have it down for the next OM.
And thank you so much Jacek @JackPK and @GrytPipe for watching and liking my performance and leaving a comment
