John Frusciante - “Bedroom Lick”

Hey!

Here’s my take on John Frusciante’s bedroom lick!

For those who don’t know what I’m on about, there’s this very short video of John playing some Hendrix-type riff in some interview many years ago. You can find it on YT by looking for “Bedroom Lick”. To my knowledge, it’s not a part of a song or anything, it’s just John playing something on the go, but it’s become quite popular cause it just sounds so cool.

This riff has been covered by a lot of people on YT, I’ve seen extended versions that people came up with and there’s some seriously great covers out there. Mine is pretty basic, but I think it came out good enough for my level

It’s a very nice pad for improvisation, especially for beginners like myself, as it’s not particularly difficult at its core.

Here’s my take on covering the original 36-second riff, I tried to get it to sound as close as I can to the original

Sounds good, Teodor , ever so Hendrix-like

Sounds great Teodor and captures a very Frusciante-like feel.

John Frusciante’s is one of my all time favorite players. Over the years there have been a lot of intimate clips of him playing like this.

Keep an eye out for the Guitar World magazine issue from July of 2006. It has a great interview of him and Flea. Most important, it comes with a disk that have an amazing video of him teaching some songs and jamming a bunch of cool stuff. You can find clips of it on the youtube also the article has the tabs. Its all out there.

Hit me up if you cant find it.

Just an aside. Please dont discount Hillel Slovak RHCPs first guitar player he was a totally funky badazz player and really gave them that funk groove back in the day. He worth taking a look at guitar wise. Totally forgotten today among most chilly pepper fans unfortunately, RIP Hillel :folded_hands:t2:

Oh, I’ve seen that video! It’s amazing, I actually learned Under The Bridge from that video, straight from the source!

I’d love to get my hands on the magazine too!

Nice bro, you know whats up then. He does a killer funk presentation also. You probobly have watched “The Funky Monks” then, the making of BSSM. Its so good. We had that on VHS tape ways back in the day 94 or something, my favorite part was him wailing on that 12 string with that song. Its one of the best chord progressing recorded in the 1990s. Not a skippable song on that whole release.

Edit. :joy: I didn’t list the song. I got to excited thinking about it.

The “Breaking the Girl” segment in that movie.

Very nice, can definitely hear the Hendrix influence. I could noodle around with this for some time.

John has had a big influence on my practice routine. Read an article where he says he practices scales for three hours before every performance. Wow! Put things in a different perspective for me.
