OK, Iāve been debating this for a little while now, but hereās an idea Iād like to trial.
If you have a specific problem on your guitar journey - make a quick video about the problem, demo it if you can, explain what youāve tried and how I can help, upload it to YouTube unlisted, and then post a link to it.
If something looks like I can help, then Iāll need your written consent for it to be used my a youtube video, and then Iāll make a response video and try my best to help.
I figure many students have similar struggles, and this way I help one student directly, but potentially many more indirectlyā¦
What thinks the community - and anyone got a starter? Iāll try to do a few, and see how they go down!
Your Grade 1 thru 4 lessons (Iām in Grade 4 now) have been so good that there hasnāt been a problem that I couldnāt fix with just more practice & a little more patience, but if something comes up, Iāll gladly reach out.
Hehe, I have many problems on my guitar journeyā¦
My main one is you seem to have covered them all in your course, and thereās far too much on my āshould doā list
I do enjoy seeing your increased participation here though and am sure youāll get many grateful takers on your generous offer. Cheers!
Iāll keep this in mind if anything specific becomes a sore spot for me.
Most of my challenges right now are a matter of developing finer control over my 3rd and 4th fingers of my fretting hand. which just takes time and work.
Thatās a great idea and a generous offer, Justin. Thanks for that.
Currently, thereās nothing I could think of, that canāt be fixed with more practice. But if my fingers stumble across something they canāt resolve on their own, I know where to find guidance.
Also, looking forward to some insights from other students. Sometimes other peopleās questions or struggles lead to some amazing ālightbulbā moments.
This is really a great idea! I must admit I can relate to what Brian says
ā¦not actually on my āshould doā list, but for my brain to really be aware and be able to take care of all aspects when Iām playingā¦I guess itās all about automating and building good habits, so that you can gradually give attention to refine further skillsā¦but I somehow feel like I have to perpetually give attention and work on my fundamentals.
It does take time and work Nate, it took way more than I could have ever imagined for me.
Iāve learnt to use a little bit of wrist and use the all forearm to facilitate some chord changes (not all, I always try to rely on my fingers first), I just do it when it seems mission impossible for ring finger and pinky - probably not the best approach but I sometimes see the pros doing these kind of adjustments.
One problem I have is that there are certain things (one lead solo in particular) that I can play ok at 80-90% speed, but whatever I try, and despite having practiced it slowly and cleanly with a metronome for months and months, I still canāt get it to the right speed confidently. Have I hit my physical limit, or is there anything I can do to overcome it?
This is a generic problem, but I can make a video if needed.
I donāt know if this will help you at all, but Iāve occasionally made progress by pushing the tempo faster and fumbling around with it for a couple attempts, and then back it off to my target tempo. to find that trying to go faster gave me the kick in the pants I needed to make progress.
Yes. By been more relaxed your brain makes decisions faster. Look up Owen Oākane, heās the psychologist who did some work with Lewis Capaldi among others. I have his book Addicted to Anxiety which is very good.
Please make a video - demo the problem if you can. For sure there are things you can do to overcome it - if anyone else has the same problem, maybe they could also add a video and I could reference a few people - that could be fun!
Hi Simon. That is indeed a fun question, and I have some possible answers, some of which you touched on but didnāt get the whole picture⦠could you email me permission in the following form:

I do have a question but Id like to know if its of interest before turning it into a video
My main issue at the moment is memorizing a song especially when its a very long one
I work on an 8 minutes long song and my focus weaken when I hit 4 minutes ⦠I just blank out
long enough to be noticed in my playing
I already read other people talk about this kind of topic on the forum so its maybe of interest for the community
8 minutes would be really too much for me. I can definetely relate to what you describe as the focus weakening, often even before the 4 minutes, and to just blank out.
This is an excellent idea, thank you Justin. I may well take you up on this.
My problem is chording placement, I find it problematic placing my fingers correctly when playing certain open chord progressions e.g. G Bm Em E7.
It could well be a physical thing my hands have always been problematic, seizing momentarily e.g. holding a teapot while pouring. If that is the case, so be it. If you think you are able to help, a video will be done.
