Kaspers recording journey so far

Hi all,

When I joined Justin Guitar back in 2015 I quickly decided that the best way for me to keep track of my own progress would be to regularly record myself (and post my tracks here). My thinking was that even if it would be hard for me to see progress from one track to another, given enough time and enough tracks… I would see a difference. And indeed this worked well for me. For example, when I posted my first track here - Gary Moore: The Loner - I was pretty happy with my playing. But looking back at the track now, 6 years later, I find it quite cringe worthy tbh. But this only shows that practice pays off in anything, from playing the guitar to recording technique.

Below will follow a (very, very long) list of all the tracks I’ve got on my SoundCloud channel right now. Most of those tracks are my own instrumental versions of songs that I like, but there are a few tracks with vocals as well. On top of the tracks listed below I’ve taken part in a fair amount of collabs with other forum members (all of which I’ve greatly enjoyed!) as well as a few YouTube videos - but I don’t have all of them on my SoundCloud. Perhaps I’ll try to collect those as well in a follow-up, but for now this is all I could manage

Originally I wanted to write a small comment to each track, explaining my thoughts about it then and now… but there are just too many tracks. This post would explode in length

So without further ado; My self-recording work so far… sorted from oldest to newst.
I don’t think anyone could listen through it all, but perhaps sample one or two early tracks and compare to a few at the end of the list to see how much progress there has been in playing and recording technique over 6 years of practice…

Take care all!

That’s an archive to be wholly proud of, as is your finessing and progress Kasper.

Wow, that’s some list - very impressive, bookmarked for a binge listen when I’ve got more time!

@Kasper I for one will be dropping back here to reminisce, because there are some absolute classics on the list and many drop right onto my go listen list ! Just put down the finger picking exercises and listening to The Loner and remembering when you first posted it and I was going through the BC. Its funny to see what you write about that now but I was like Whoa that is amazing, that’s what I want to do !! So from day one you were an inspiration and remains so to this day. Still a long way from where I want to be but this collection will serve as a reminder. So a huge thanks from me Kasper.

Now time for some 'Purple SKoW then a jump up to 'Maiden. TMTM and back to some picking…maybe!!

Thankyou
You Rock Jack Black.

Cheers

What an inspiration you are, Kasper, so many on that list I’d love to learn to play. I listened to a few and there’s one in particular that I’m going to start learning - wish me luck! And I’ll be back to listen to a lot more.

Blimey Kasper if this is cringe to you I don’t want to hear your thoughts about my best recording I’ve done so far :rofl:

Hi Kasper,
Impressive list in its own right. But the quality is what stands out to me. Took in Knocking On Heavens Door. Sounded like Slash wailing away and great tones to boot! Nice work.

Keep on rock’n and I expect to see your list double in the next 5 years, maybe with a few band rehearsals or live performance songs tossed in for grins!

Thanks for sharing, Kasper.

Over the years I have enjoyed your recordings and especially appreciate the time you’ve taken to share details about the recording process, the playing techniques, and tone whenever I’ve asked.

I still recall the first time I listened to your rendition of Highway Star (or Strange Kind of Woman) after reading what you’d said about an attempt to get Blackmore’s tone. As I started to listen I thought I was listening to the original, that perhaps I misunderstood something. And then at the moment Gillan starts to sing there was no vocal. You nailed Blackmore’s tone and playing.

And have done the same in all the other covers.

Like @adi_mrok said, your “cringe-worthy” is beyond what I imagine I can ever achieve in my years ahead. You’re in another league.

Now, any chance of pointing us to some video footage of the new band performing?

Well, we’re all our own worst critics I guess… certainly that’s the case for me at least. I’m always happy with my results, but I also hear the flaws and look for ways to improve.

I don’t find you guys recordings cringe at all btw, it’s always about putting things into perspective… taking experience and number of years played into account

I hope that I will eventually get some good live footage of the band… but it’s actually pretty hard to get. I posted a few pictures from setup, because that’s when we “have the room”. Later, once we go on stage, we rarely know anyone in the crowd and need to focus on quickly getting started with playing. We tried to set up some GoPro cams on stage last time, but they fell down quickly and just recorded some feet

An impressive catalogue of recordings! I’ve previewed a few and will return to listen more. I’m liking what I hear.

@Kasper Do you have a go-to source for backing tracks?

Hi,

Most of the backing tracks is from a site www.licklibrary.com, but I’ve recently also started using tracks from https://karaoke-version.com/
I like that you can buy “custom mix” versions at karaoke-version, which makes it possible to get stems for each individual instrument rather than a backing track mix. Depends on what you need them for - for playing along it’s easier with a mixed track, but for ultimate flexibility when recording covers the stems are better.

Really good stuff sir. Nice to revisit these again. Play on playa!

What a portfolio, very impressive, I could only wish to be able to play half that much songs after 6 years of practice.

Metallica - Fade To Black, absolute perfection.

Thumbs up!

Tbh, Kaspar, even just reading through the list is too much work for this lazy git
I can assure you that I have listened with admiration to most of what you have shared on the forum in the last four years. I particularly enjoyed the KRK productions with Frenchy and Roman, as well as the fly-on-the-wall account of setting up a serious band (similar to @Endureth).
Rock on, dude :metal: :sunglasses: :metal:
