Lisa_S Oct 2023 - Greensleeves Chord Melody

No worries, Andrea - no time pressure for checking in here. Everybody is welcome anytime. :smiley:

Thanks a lot for taking the time to listen (twice :smiley:) and leaving some words of encouragement. I appreciate it a lot. :slight_smile:

I’m happy to hear that as this was my intention. This piece is just so sweet and has a lovely, melancholic mood to it I was hoping to capture. :slight_smile:

I wish you all the best and lots of fun on this one. It’s definitely worth the effort, as it will give you so many things back. :slight_smile:

No need for any apologies, I appreciate you took your time. :slight_smile:

I know that feeling. Once something feels like a grind, yeah put it aside.

Coming along nicely, Lisa. You’ve clearly put a lot of effort learning that piece from memory. The rollin chords sounded good to me. As for the F barre chord changes on some occasions it looked like your index finger was up in the air rather than hovering above the fretboard on the previous chord given it more distance to travel to get into position for the barre. It looks a tricky piece to learn, so well done to get that melody memorized and under your fingers. Definitely go back to it at some point when you’re feeling medieval :grinning:

Thanks a lot for listening and your kind words, James. Highly appreciated. :smiley:

I just rewatched and yeah, I think you’re right on this. It’s pointing away from the fretboard for whatever reason. Will pay some attention on this behaviour during practice. Great observation, thank you! :slight_smile:

Haha, then I will check if I find appropiate mediavel clothing as well to make it even more authentic. :joy:

Hi Lisa, very nice. Don’t worry about the nerves when recording. You’ll find that in time these go away. Just make sure you make a habit of it. Even if you don’t plan on sharing a video, record yourself to get used to it.

One thing caught my attention. You often look at your right hand. Maybe you should try to practice in front of a mirror to get used to looking in front of you while still seeing yourself play. It helps me for sure.

Thank you so much, Sebastian! I appreciate you taking the time to listen and sharing some good advice. :smiley:

Good point and something that I was thinking about as well. But the difficulty is, I’m only using my phone for filming which is also required as metronome. Maybe I should resurrect my ancient one for the metronome from time to time, to have the newer one as recording device.

Another good suggestion. I hope it works better watching me play in the mirror than trying to comb my hair while blow-drying - arm knots incoming. :joy:

Very nice performance. I think you will struggle to make it sound “better” on video unless you go for a microphone and audio interface. You played it pretty much perfectly, if you are nervous and tense this is obviously a bit of a barrier to giving your best performance. I’m honestly struggling to pick fault with this, maybe a bit tentative at the very start? I want to give you some constructive criticism but I’m not sure what to criticise!
Well done. I like fingerstyle a lot. I would like to get better with a pick but revert to acoustic fingerstyle too often!
Well done.

Hi Lisa/Beanie!!!
Just watched your video late yesterday and I am impressed with how well you managed this difficult piece!!! I’m sure it is very difficult to learn the intricacies of fingerstyle while fingering some pretty hard looking chords! Well done!!!
I attempted an “Easy Guitar” version from a Hal Leonard Christmas book a few years back, got the suggested strumming pattern down but couldn’t get the F chord… of all the songs I attempted, Greensleeves was my worst & I never even tried it fingerstyle!!!
As for on cam nerves, just echoing what others have said… keep at it & just try to shake it off. My step-sister was a dancer in high school, she was literally sick to her stomach before every performance… then she’d go out and do some amazing dance!!! It’ll get better eventually!
Keep refining this song, but really nice listening to this take!!!

I thought that was very well done Lisa_S. Very mellow and I enjoyed listening to your music.
I think I’m getting to be a fan of fingerpickin style of playing. Your doing very good at it.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice, Lisa. I enjoyed that arrangement.

I’ve added learning fingerstyle in addition to my currnt course through Grades 1-3 on the app. Currently I’m early in Grade 2. I look forward to being able to play something like this.

Nice one, Lisa! So impressed by the folk who’ve put the effort into this tune, I got to that lesson and was like okay that’s waaaaay too hard and gonna take far too much time to learn… next lesson please :see_no_evil: :face_with_peeking_eye: :joy:
So much great advice above and reading through your comments, seems like you have a good handle on what you need to work on (after a well earned break from this too of course :wink:). I’ll just note, as I don’t think anyone else mentioned it, that I loved seeing your leg keeping steady time throughout, there’s a solid foundation for everything right there :sunglasses: :+1:
I also saw your comment about needing to upskill a bit on trimming videos, if you have any questions about that, please do reach out :slightly_smiling_face:
Take care :hugs:

I got myself a very cheap metronome years ago and it still works fine, so that would also be an option :slight_smile:

Thanks so much for your kind words, Michael. Highly appreciated. :smiley:

100 % true and I’m pondering over this topic for months now. I’m a bit lost when it comes down to all these technical bits and pieces and know, it would require lots of time to learn how to use all of these things. Currently, I’m still in a position to think I’d rather invest this time to simply play guitar, but some day I’ll go down this rabbit hole (probably after Christmas, see you in 2025! :rofl:).

Thanks again for you encouraging feedback. I think it’s not perfect, yet and there are things that can be improved and smoothened - I will keep at it.

So do I. :smiley:

@CATMAN62

Thanks very much for your kind word of encouragementm Tod. I appreciate it a lot. :smiley:

Yeah, the F-chord is hard at first. I remember my initial struggles on it all to well and even with some more experience, it’s not coming at a 100 % rate. But it does get better with practice and is coming more reliable. Whenever you’re ready, just tackle it again. :smiley:

I will try to get used to it a little more. But I can perfectly relate to your step-sisters feelings now. Funnily enough, as teen the nerves were less an issue. Probably it was that “I got nothing to lose”-attitude I had back then. Ironically, this one I lost. :rofl:

@HappyCat

Thanks a lot for your kind words, Jim! Highly appreciated. :smiley:

It is a cool thing to do and fun as well! Also love to listen to it myself as well - this helps keep the motivation up. :smiley:

@thewritescott

Thank you so much for your kind words, Scott. I appreciate it a lot. :smiley:

It’s Justin’s arrangement and once you’ll come to Grade 3, you will also get to learn it yourself. It’s part of the course. :slight_smile: Wish you lots of fun learning it in advance! Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

@nzmetal

Thank you so much for your kind, encouraging words, Jeff. Highly appreciated! :smiley:

Hahaha, I know that kind of feeling whenever it comes to lead lines, looking at you Lick-in Riff. :rofl: :sweat_smile: I’m sure we both can learn these things, but maybe it’s because the interested in the given topic isn’t as high as for others and that’s why we try to avoid it? :thinking: :sweat_smile:

Thanks for this little observation. :smiley: This is something I really needed to put effort in (still struggling when strumming gets more complex in 16th note patterns). For whatever reason, I normally use my head and upper body parts for keeping time. It always was that way, also back then while learning piano (I even chewed gums in time :rofl:). Trying to overcome this is a little tough, but I’m keeping at it. :slight_smile:

That’s very kind of you, Jeff! Thanks so much. I’ll come back to that in case of need. :slight_smile:

Take care :hugs:

Thanks again to all you great peeps in this community! I’m very grateful for all the valuable feedback and encouragement in here! :orange_heart:

Hi Lisa,

Nice work.
Always good to hear something a little different.
Not heard Greensleeves in years, though you’ve now got me racking my brains trying to remember what Commodore 64 game it was the theme music to. (Yes, I’m sadly that old. :))

Thanks a lot for your kind words, Digger. Appreciate it a lot. :smiley:

I’m in doubt I can help you out here, it was slightly before my time. :sweat_smile: But at least age is only a number and more a matter of feeling. Some days I feel like 4, some like 17 again and then there’s days I feel like 98. :rofl:

@Do2nt

Thanks for taking your time and checking my recording out, Donn. Highly appreciated! :smiley:

I’m glad I could inspire you to learn it yourself - it’s a fun one and rewarding when you stick to it. Wish you loads of joy while learning. :slight_smile:

I really enjoyed listening to your playing Lisa. For me personally, it motivates me, it makes me very curious to see what I might be able to learn in the future :smiley:

Paul, that is a great suggestion. I just started doing that with a couple of recordings and did 2 takes back to back and I did notice that the second take was more relaxed. When recording separate takes I’ve had several takes in a row where I have gone off the rails in the first 10 seconds and had to stop.

Lisa, a nice finger-style rendition of Greensleeves. I have done classical arrangements of Greensleeves but couldn’t get the F chord finger-style section right when I tried to play this in Justin’s course. It really is a challenge and exposes my weakness in the F chord barre when I lifted the ring finger in the fretting hand. It is hard to get rid of that muted note. So bravo to you for your performance. Hopefully I will master this when I finish grade 3 consolidation. Since I don’t have fingernails, I won’t get your crisp arpeggiated tone.
