Mac's learning log

Oh that’s really good news :+1:

Sure I’ll give it a go, I’ll start with something that’s not too hard and I’ll report back in a few days

So I tried standing up and playing while I was practicing today and it went better than I expected! I’d say that it maybe threw off the vertical position of my picking hand a little so I needed to concentrate a little more to make sure I was strumming the correct number of strings but that’s a minor adjustment really.

I can immediately feel how it alters my posture when playing, almost certainly for the better. I can see how it is you find it more comfortable.

I think I’ll continue to do it for at least a song or two in each of my future practices as it might help prevent future aches for me also :+1:

Day 86:

I had a comic page to draw and finished working too late to play
So I had to take a few days off from playing guitar
The comic is done and I’m back
If you wanna see my work , its here :

Trained on finger stretches and crawling as a warm up

Played on Yousician for 35 minutes

Trained on changing chords C A G E D standing up ( 26 in 45 secs )
Trained on changing chords C G Am F major 7 standing up ( 26 in 45 secs )

Standing up :

I started by playing the challenges of the week :

Sitting on the dock of the bay by Otis Redding Basic melody level 2
Hold back the river by James Bay Basic melody level 4 ( needs practice on this one )

Played Losing my religion ( training for strumming on F major 7 with a C bass )

Played blaze of Glory ( training for strumming on F major 7 with a C bass )

played Dreams by Fleetwood mac ( F G ) speed at 80 %

Played set fire to the rain by Adele ( Training for strumming pattern EM G D AM C )
I had lots of notes detected wrong so I don t know if I was playing poorly or if it was the app having notes detection issues
Many people complained about issues lately so it might not be me
I usually had no problem playing this song so I don t understand these mistakes

I’m still not happy at all with my F major 7 … practice practice practice

grade 2 in JG :

Practiced Open E Minor Pentatonic Scale

I dont want to give up like last year because of my work load …
The summer heat might be a problem though

I let summer last year really sabotage my guitar practice. In my case it’s because I have a bunch of other summer hobbies that I’m desperate to get done while the weather is (relatively) good and guitar playing falls down my priorities. I’m going to come with some sort of target this year, maybe to play 3 times a week, so at least I’m not going backwards like I did last year.

true … In my case watering my little garden will take some time in my everyday schedule
I fear the heat most
Last year it was 31°C in my room , its like an oven
its hard to get anything done with this heat

maybe you should plan a schedule for practice during summer ?

Yes I think you’re right. I do currently plan 2 or 3 days at a time but I don’t include any guitar practice on that plan because I get it done anyway. The plan just includes things that might otherwise get missed such as the exercises that my physio gave me to do. Once summer arrives and there’s more things competing for my time I think it will be important that guitar practice goes on the list also.

I know what you mean about when it gets really hot. Even here in the U.K. there’s some days around 30 degrees and my house doesn’t deal with that well. It starts to affect sleep which impacts everything else

yup otherwise you ll never get it done
This year I planned on finishing my work at 8pm everyday and get some guitar done after
But as you’ve seen , as soon as I get more work , I gotta stop playing :frowning:
At least I stopped only for a few days thanks to my planning , it helps to stick to a schedule

last year we had many days above 30°C sometimes it was even 35°
As you say it affects sleep … this year i’ll try to put a bed outside
When the inside will be hot like an oven I ll sleep outside
But I dont know how Ill play guitar in this heat yet …

I already learned how to pick the right strings when strumming thanks to all my practice on yousician
I should practice on muting the E string with my thumb

My first try butchered the song

grade 2 in JG :

I felt it was harder than yesterday and then I realised i was at 100 bpm and not at 80 ::sweat_smile:

I really like standing up while playing , its weird because i thought it would be real hard to do it XD

this one i struggle on the bridge … a lot
Its like my brain does not want to understand what i want it to do or learn

Played Losing my religion ( training for strumming on F major 7 with a C bass )

Played Hurt level 4 cow boy chords ( training for strumming on F major 7 with a C bass ) twice
a real nice song to practice but i still butcher it XD

Played set fire to the rain by Adele
I finally understood what was causing the D chord issue
Its the “bleed effect” !
when you play a chord, and if it rings out for too long, the sound ‘bleeds into’ the next chord, causing it to be perceived as wrong by the app, even if you play correctly.
So when I play my Em chord before D on this song the app hears the upper strings ringing and D is perceived as wrong
I m releived to know it wasnt me playing poorly
Thats the problem when relying on apps !

grade 2 in JG :

Practiced Open E Minor Pentatonic Scale
Practiced on the strumming machine for All Down 8th Note Strumming for 5 minutes at 70 bpm
( Em E D A G )

I don’t know the particular song but shouldn’t you be muting the thick strings when switching from Em to D given that the open E and A strings don’t feature in a D chord?

yes but im not at that stage …
I havent learned palm muting yet
for now i was just letting them ring and it wasn t a problem until last week
the app had a update with a better chord recognition so now i see this mistake

how can i stop them from ringing ? did i miss a lesson ?

Ah fair enough. I tend to hang my thumb over the top of the fretboard to at least silence the E but I appreciate that’s a matter of opinion whether you should do that and also not everyone will be able to do it anyway based on hand size

Im a woman so my hand will always be smaller than a man’s
Standing up makes it easier to mute with the thumb though
I tried it once or twice and i buzzed the string more then I muted it

its extremely tiring for the hand ( especially the pinky ) to switch between 2 chords only for a long time
good training
